I've never used thumbnails in a post before (mainly because I've only just signed up as a member - so only just have a portfolio).

Is there an easy way to do it? I've just had a look at the code from someone else's message with thumbs, but surely you don't have to find the URL for the link AND for the thumb each time?

Maybe I'm missing something? Hope you can enlighten me!

There's a little button right above where you type a post. the last one is for thumbnails. all you need to know is the image ID # which you can find when you look at the pic.

No need to be embarassed, it is information that is needed often enough to have been included in a help article (link).

Also, this only works to create clickable thumbs for images in your portfolio -- it does not work for images hosted elsewhere. For those images you will need to find the URLs for the image and thumb and create the link the 'hard' way.
