Hi Tyrone,
I really like the first one. The composition is great. I think it would work really well in black and white as well. I like the idea of the second one. This idea would work really well from an angle where there was less distraction in the background.
I shoot a lot at our local skate park and have found that the flash helps to fill in the dark shadows when I'm shooting on a sunny day. Photoshop CS's "Shadow / Highlight" filter does a great job of this too. I also like to experiment with greyscale and added noise to give a real urban feel.
Often I get down low so that I have the sky as a background, I even have the kids jumping over me. If your interested, I've uploaded lots of my photos to a site I made so the local guys could see the photos My Site
Cheers
Kieran

I think these are great. When I take my sons to the skatepark I want to try the second shot. Was this done with layering, cloning?

The second pic is four sequential pics layered, stitched and cloned together. I think I could have done it an easier way but I panned a little causing the backgrounds to not match making it a but more work than it should have been. Next time I will use a tripod and use the canon photo stich software. Thanks for the comments.

if you want to see what good skateboard photography looks like, head over to www.skateboardphotography.com and register for free, and take a look at the photo critiques. Technically these photos are not bad, but in terms of skateboard photography there is a lot missing. If you have flashes you should utilize them and underexpose the background to make the skater pop better. The timing on the first one is pretty early, and the angle doesn't really illustrate where he's going to be landing, which is important with skateboard shots. Shooting sequences at anything less than 5 or 6 fps is usually not worth it in skateboarding, also in the sequence the guy doesn't even land the trick. I don't know if you were looking for this kind of critique but if you really like skateboarding and/or skateboarding photography there is a lot to learn, I'm still learning a lot about it. Again I don't mean to rip them apart cuz technically that first one is a pretty good photo. |
