The very first queston is "what's your budget?"
Right after that we need to know if you really want/need true macro performance, that is, 1:1 magnification, or if good close-up is satisfactory.

I second that. I have this lens for my D70 and it's terrific for the price. The Tamron 90mm macro lens is another great one in the same range (though I don't know if you could get one for a Sigma DSLR), but I used both and prefer the build of the Sigma EX lenses considerably. |

You can:
get a macro lens, or a lens with macro capability. You want 1:1 enlargement (some of the bigger telephoto zooms are 3:1 or 5;1 - that is less magnification than 1:1, so less 'macro')
The 90-105 range prime macro lenses are the most popular choice.
Option 2 is a set of close up filters. they reduce the focusing distance (how close you can be to an item and still focus on it). These can be cheap (I got mine for $20)
Option 3 is extension tubes. they sit between the body and any lens. check my portfolio for some examples.

sigma4less.com
I bought my macro 105mm through them. They even called me to confirm my order. They are closed till may 02 due to customary holidays just like bhphoto.com. Some kind of Asian holiday period that they even shut down there businesses. |

Uh, it would be called Passover. Big Jewish Holiday. It was when the Jews were finally released form Eqyptian bondage. April 23-May 1 this year.
Ever seen the movie 'The Ten Commandments'?
b&h and many of the NYC photoshops are owned by Jews - it is why they are closed on Saturdays as well.
