Good idea. (However, lately it seems like too many people are already doing that. :( Sorry, kind of a rant.) |

Reminds me of The Future. There should be a theme though. I mean, a regular challenge with a topinc, but without editing rules.

Not knowing anything about post processing procedures, I do believe that I would skip this challenge. Being new to photography, I find it difficult to submit photos to challenges other than the basic editing as I fear I will have no hope whatsoever of competing.
While I can appreciate that I am here to learn, one's pride does come into play when submitting to challenges, and I for one don't particularly care to finish at the bottom of the pack... haven been beaten to a pulp by people that have a good grasp of post processing.
Enjoy... but I do fear you will be excluding a great number of players.

Interestingly enough, I actually believe experienced 'shoppers have a bigger edge in Basic Editing than in Advanced Editing. Given that I have a clear idea of what I want to do when I make an image in camera, it's generally MUCH easier for me to accomplish this in advanced than in basic. Basic requires me to find "legal" ways of accomplishing what otherwise would be simple things to do. So for me the main difference between the rulesets is that advanced allows "special effects", and as a rule these don't win votes anyway.
It's true that a poorly-exposed image can be better "rescued" in advanced editing, but given proper exposure to bein with and a relatively "straight" result in mind, basic editing just requires me to "reinvent the wheel" in trying to perfect my image.
Equally oddly, some of my least-manipulated entries have been to advanced-rules challenges; it just depends on the subjects, really, for me.

I think the "Dreams" challenge would have been great for that :)

A very interesting perspective Robert... I do believe I may have been guilty of not considering all of the facets involved in this exercise. You are perfectly right in bringing to my attention that post processing would not rescue an image of poor quality.
Best thing for me to do is to ensure that my photos are captivating from the onset, and in keeping with established norms.
Thank you for enlightening me in that perspective... I owe you yet another one.

Along with a no-editing challenge, we have tried this once before; I suppose we might again inThe Future. |
