I am having issues with my auto focus on my Finepix S3000.

This is straight out of the camera, the flower was completely filling the auto focus box but it still focused on the grass in the background. I had this happen many times yesterday on my trip to the local zoo. any ideas as to how to fix this?

Not sure what the minimum focusing distance is on your cam, but that could be your problem, too close. Check your manual and step back a little.

on this particular pic I may have forgotten to hit the macro button or thought I hit it or something like that, but at other times during the day I was well within the focal range and had to redo the auto focus a few times before it picked up the intended subject. probably should have taken a few shots with it focused "improperly" for example, but didn't think of it.

Edit: I found an example. I was a good 15 feet away from this macaw and THOUGHT I had it in focus, but the window in the back was actually picked up as the focal point.

I fully admit BTW that it could totally be something I did and not the camera at all.... just trying to figure out which.

Check your batteries. Some prosumer cameras start acting wonky when the batteries are getting low. Try a freshly charged set and see what happens.

My fuji 602 was that way - i notieced it most often when i was doing any kind of person against a wall type shot - unless the person was 2 or more feet from the wall, the wall was what hte camera focused on.

The battery idea is interesting though. might explain why i never seemed to be able to figure out when and why it would happen.

next time I start noticing it, I'll try replacing the batteries and let you know if it helped any. Thanks for all the ideas folks!

Digicam use contrast detection to focus. If your subject doesn't have enough contrast it wont' focus on your subject. The macro can be a solution for both problems. with some camera when you are in macro mode, it won't focus at infinity.

I don't know about the battery issue, I doubt it has any bearing here.
I assume you can see it focus through the lense,if you rush your shot it can introduce bad focussing or the dreaded camera shake, ensure your shutter speeds are high enough and watch the focus.I never used the lcd screen for taking pics, just the eye piece.
Hope you resolve this, it looks a fine cam.

Welcome to the S3000 owners club! Dubious distinction perhaps. Check out train's profile for what can be achieved with this cam....she has some fantastically sharp pics.

My experience is that you have to repeatedly 'half-depress' the shutter release button until it manages to lock on; this is especially true if it is foggy, too dark or, paradoxically, too light. Also place the centre-spot on your subject in a region with contrast (as mentioned above). Use less zoom if focusing is a problem. Don't go in too close with the macro mode. Focus on another target equidistant to your subject but without contrast/lighting issues and then hold 'half-press' until you have recentred on your original subject. Never experienced any power-related effects on focusing.

Good luck! Ben.
