The "camera obscura", a darkened room with a small aperture projecting the scene outside on a wall has been known since ancient times. In the 17th century a lens was inserted in the aperture, and the "portable camera obscura came into being, basically a sedan chair type thing. These were common aids for artists to make realistic sketches as the bases for paintings done later in the studio.
In 1800 Thomas Wedgewood used silver nirate on leather to create a photosensitive surface. Objects were placed on the surface and it was exposed to sunlight. The images were not permanent.
In 1816 Nicéphore Niépce first used photosensitive paper in a camera obscura. In 1826 he succeeded in making the images permanent ("fixing" them).
In 1834 Henry Fox-Talbot came up with the ancestor of negative-to-positive as we know it.
I'd consider Niépce's use of photosensitive materials in a camera obscura to be the first "camera".
I don't know if anyone had "invented" it before, on paper (like da Vinci "invented" the helicopter, say) but his appears to be the first functioning "camera".

Thanks, for the info Robt., but I think you're wrong. I could have sworn Al Gore said he invented the first camera. |

He did the camera first then decided he needed a way to share his photos with others.
