I ran into a strange problem with my card reader yesterday after installing some USB 2.0 ports, plugging in the USB 2.0 card reader and trying to transfer my RAW images to the computer.
It appears that the speed of the card can't keep up with USB 2.0 therefore not all of the file information is transferred when the file is copied from the card to the computer.
Is this possible with the slower cards? The card in question is a SanDisk 512 MB (not ultra or ultra II or extreme). It's just the plain jane card and it doesn't mention the speed on the card.
How do I find out what the speed of the card is? Would this be in the properties that I can access when the card is in the reader?

The speed of the card isn't something you can check, outside of doing file transfer tests.
You should not get errors using a slow card in a fast reader, it should only read the card as fast as the card is capable of.
What brand of reader is it?

edit: The reader/card combo works fine with USB 1.1

Hmmm, no famiarity with that one. I had a Delkin reader that had problems with some cards, replaced it with a Sandisk reader and no problema.
First thing I would check is to make sure those new USB ports are configured and functioning as USB 2.0, not 1.1
If that's confirmed and still a problem, I'd try a different reader.

I have other devices plugged in to the USB 2.0 ports and the USB 2.0 Hub. When the reader is connected to the 1.1 port I keep getting the message indicating that the device can run faster. I don't get the message when the reader is connected to the 2.0 port.
I have a feeling it's the reader since I just tried a faster card and had the same problem.

Also, try connecting the reader to the 'pooter directly, bypassing the hub. Hubs can sometimes be very problematic, though they should not be.

I did that too, same problem. My first thought was that it was the hub but it's working fine with other devices.

Yup, time to try a different reader!
Edit: please do send me a PM and let me know how you make out...

Another thing that may be contributing to this is the minimum speed of the USB port of 1.5 Mb/s. The cards I tested were 12x and slower.
Thanks Fritz for your help so far.
