I'm about to return back but as I don't have a job or house I'm free to go anywhere I choose, we love the ocean and the country.

Any ideas?

Your welcome in Saundersfoot. This is how it looks out my window this morning Its a pretty resort village in west wales smack in the middle of the pembrokeshire national park a couple of miles from Tenby and a hour from Cardiff, If you want peaceful easy Living its the place to be.

My two suggestions would be either the lake district or devon/cornwall area.

The lakes is colder and wetter but has some amazing scenery and endless places to go walking.

Devon and Cornwall also have some great scenery and ready access to lots of coastline. It's also generally warmer down there.

The coast isn't really ever more than an hour or so drive from anywhere in the UK.

Given the current state of the UK housing market, the only question is ... what can you afford? :o) Anywhere in the south is gonna cost you way more to rent/buy than further north... and if you're a fan of impressive countryside, there's always Wales or Scotland, nice and cheap too mostly :o)

Shane, this brings back memories. As a child we used to have our holidays at Pendine Sands and regularly travel into Tenby and Saundersfoot (I remember a big amusement arcade that I loved in Saundersfoot). Many wonderful evenings were spent in Amroth, I remember playing at about the age of 12 being on beach at twilight, playing with a toy plane and declaring myself an 'Amrothian'

Thanks :)

John,

We are finding ourselves looking at the south-west, we originate from Halesowen (M5 Junc3) and we would often head on down the M5 and end up in our favorite place - Sheldon. We brought in the millenium on Ness Beach (I'll have to dig out the photos). If you know of any IT Manager positions in Exeter I'll be right there :)

Sadly we don't have money behind us, our time in Switzerland has done little more than put us straight after my business failed in the late 90's. So naturally cost is an issue and I also need to be close to somewhere I can work, as it will be a good many years before I can make my money from my photography. Scotland looks nice (I've never been) but there's a lack of good football up there ;)

Hampshire. It's warm (relatively), beautiful countryside, next to the sea and horribly expensive. Definitely worth it though.

I probably was in The arcade the same time as you as I used to love it as well(probably to much, its where all my pocket money used to go) and yes its still there, In fact I bet you'd be surprised at how little any of it has changed, This is probably to do with it being in the national park.
If you loved it as a child I bet you'll love it now come visit and bring your camera

If you want to live by the sea, there are 2 places I'd consider living in...
Brighton: Very hip and trendy, loads to photograph, commuting distance to London, full of character. Unfortunately very expensive though.

Whitby: My favourite seaside town, really beautiful and surrounded by miles and miles of absolutely gorgeous countryside. The old cobbled streets of Whitby are really nice, and the town has great atmosphere. It's miles from anywhere useful though... nearest big towns/cities are Newcastle, York and Leeds.

Bobsterlosbster is right - the only place worth looking at for countryside, coast and sensible prices is Yorkshire. Moved here four years ago and still can't believe how great it is!

I'm really happy with Huddersfield... I can be on the motorway in 5 minutes, and Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield are all about 1/2 hour away. I can be parked up in Leeds town centre in 20 minutes. London is straight down the M1. We're on the edge of the Peak District and the countryside is beautiful. We're about 1 hour away from the Lake District, and North Wales is manageable. The east coast is about 1 hour away. Housing was very cheap about 5 years ago when we bought our house, but prices are rising rapidly.
What I love about Yorkshire is that it's one of the most cultured places I've ever been to... so much happens in the way of theatre, music, cinema, dance and so on but also I've found the average man in the street to be more cultured than the rest of the country. People tend to be much more friendly as well. And everything is so much cheaper.

This sounds good :)

I'm rather into folky stuff - I'd imagine that there is plenty up there :)

Not a huge fan of folk, but yes there is an abundance up here. There are pubs in Huddersfield where folk groups get together regularly, and there are also frequent folk festivals.

Being a musician, there is a huge community of artists and musicians in Huddersfield which is one of the things that has always drawn me back here. If you play any instruments, it's really easy to get together and jam with people here regardless of your ability. Some of the best musicians I've ever met live in Huddersfield, and the town is really going through a cultural renaissance right now.
