After using PS CS2 for a couple of days, I'm really impressed with some of the new features. Based on the last few files I've edited, Smart Sharpen does a better job than my old method of USM on the lab mode lightness channel. And I previously used Noiseware, but the Reduce Noise plugin also seems to do a better job. It's also nice being able to do curves adjustments during raw conversion. Adobe has definitely focused on photographers with this release.
Has anyone beside Justine and Beetle tried the new version?

I've been using it the past couple of days as a 30-day trial download and is quite an improvement over PS 7.01
Guess the one thing I have always liked about CS was the crop size window that can be switched, as I generally use a 640x512 crop or vice-versa, and not having to type it in everytime I want to do a vertical or horizontal crop, I can just hit the double arrows and switch the orientation.
The Shadow/Highlight tool is a huge asset as is the filters and noise reduction filters.
Will be VERY hard NOT to upgrade after using it. |

I'm about to acquire CS 8.0. Is there a marked difference on ver 7 ? My sister-in-law is a graphic designer and said IHO, there wasn't much difference or need to upgrade to CS. It all comes down to what your uses are I guess. If anyone has the time to post just a couple of "wow" features of CS that ver 7 doesn't have that I may find useful . I'm eager to learn as much as I can about this fantastic program ! :-) |

I can't see myself being able to afford this for a very, very, very long time. |

I'd love to get my hands on CS 8.0. Right now they only have CS 2 available. :)
Seriously though, are you considering upgrading to CS or CS 2? I wouldn't upgrade from 7 to CS but 7 to CS 2 makes more sense.
From 7 to CS
Camera Raw built in rather than an add-on is a must have.
Color Matching is nice if you achieve a look you like on one variation of a subject. It often doesn't work all that well but the functionality is there with other tools.
Shadow/Highlight tool, it's convenient for some photos but functionality is already there with a combination of other tools.
Lens Blur Filter is fun but nearly useless.
Photo Filter again is fun but I haven't really found a good use for it.
Filter Gallery is very useful to some but I don't tend to use a lot of filters so I don't care if it's there.
New Interpolations are better than the bicubic only choice.
The file browser is better but is still lacking.
Several other tools were added but I've used them so infrequently or not at all that I don't remember what they were.
Overall the upgrade from 7 to CS isn't that big of an upgrade unless you use RAW. From 7 to CS 2 is a no brainer. |

thanks for posting this little insight technoShroom. At the moment CS 8.0 is what I can get. I haven't played around with RAW yet but I can't wait to give it a go. Don't know a lot about it, but will learn. Look forward to seeing the results :-) |

The full version is $599. The upgrade is either $499 or $149, depending on what you own already.
In the end, you'll end up with a proper, full version of photoshop, no matter which way you go. |

I'm deciding I miscommunicate...question...the full version and upgrade versions are EXACTLY same files, correct? my upgrade is $149 since I received PS Elements 2 with camera purchase...so I take it I should be doing this "upgrade". Just didn't wanna get upgrade and read thread tomorrow that tells what all the "UPGRADE version" is lacking vs. the "full version" or some such....and beetle?thanks ;-)
pfffftttttt edit here...READ (imagine that) and I'm a $499 upgrader "-( wahhhhhhhhhhh

Sonya, perhaps you can find an OLD OLD version of PS at a garage sale or fleamarket, then you can get the upgrade for the $150. |

well done, Sonya! But if you can find an old version cheap (and that DOES happen), you would still be better off.
Here is your canon customer link as a clickable one, just to make it easier for others. |

Very good advice given here. Thanks to input from this Lady,,, I managed to find a version 6 of PS on eBay at a very good price, and upgraded to CSII for $150. USD, saving myself a lot of moola. I do believe the seller might still have a few versions of this product, I will check and advise you accordingly.

In the US at least, there is a chain of stores called Half Price Books, which also sells old software versions at very low prices. Might be more accessable than a garage sale.

A note to those buying old versions to upgrade. It's a potentially good path, I did it and it saved me $$$, since the only alternative for me at the time was a full-price purchase. However:
- Be careful that the old version was not registered. You will not be able to upgrade from a previously regeistered version unless you have paperwork transferring onwership.
- Be careful as to which version you buy, make sure it is one that qualifies for the upgrade. That means a full version, unregistered, with a version umber in the required range.

Indeed a very good point Kirbic... and I do thank you for making that clear to me in a previous thread, as it did serve me well.
As indicated, I managed to purchase an unregistered version 6 of PhotoShop and saved a bundle.

Thanks from me, too. I plan to order from your link in the near future. For what it's worth, the webpage says that the offer is good through November 30, 2005. |

I got to use my friend's copy of CS2.
Is anyone else here not impressed? I find that everything is slower. Granted, my friend has a PIII 1 gig with 512MB RAM. CS worked just fine on those specs, but CS2 brings it to its knees. For example, using the hand tool is annoyingly slower. Using any touch up tools with a large size brush really slowed down as well. The strangest however is that the mouse cursor frame rate goes down and gets choppy when just passing the mouse over the picture with certain tools selected.
Also, there may be a memory leak or two as things progressively get bogged down. Maybe it's all just due to inadequate hardware, but I think wait on upgrading to CS2. |

FWIW, CS has a memory leak so it's no surprise that CS2 has it as well.
What I like about CS2 is the improved RAW conversion. The Bridge is nice but is slower than the file viewer in CS. I haven't done much touch up yet so can't compare those tools.
