Hey everyone,
I've been shopping for lighting equipment for a while, and i just realized i don't exactly know what's the difference between a Square (rectangle really) and a Octagonal Soft-Box.
I would presume the Octa is for Portraits, while the Rectangular for ... everything else?

Of course you can use either for portraits, or anything else for that matter, but the octagonal softboxes do make nice round catchlights. I've got 2 of the alienBees medium Octaboxes and I think they're great.

at work, we have Chimera brand "soft box". there pretty nice.
but the reason for this post is that for hundreds of dollars less, if you have just a little knowledge of electricity, have home depot near ya, and an art store, you can build a soft box real easily, and to any spec that you want.

just happen to have some examples on PS, but it will have to wait, I'm going to work on an all nighter right now, until then.........

I'm more worried about the weed whacker. Bad memories of Ray Stevens' songs come back to haunt me.
There's no live chickens or peach preserves around are there????

That's all very nice, but can someone actually answer my question on the Soft-Box? What's the difference in use from a Square and Octa; any specifics?
