hard to say if it is, or is not over the top as you've created something that is no longer a photograph. the question is, are you happy with your new creation?
looks cool to me :) |

Yes sabphoto it took several weeks, not working on it nonstop, just a little every now and again. It was changed many times. I have about 4 or 5 of this kind of thing going at one time. When I stuck, or have a creative block with client work I jump on one of them and take my mind off the block.

Yes I guess I am. Yet I always see something I could have done different, but you got to stop some time.

sofap, if DPC ever offers another digital art challenge (i.e. no rules, anything goes), I sure hope that YOU will be somewhere in a deep jungle, far away from an internet connection.
This picture has nothing to do with photography anymore, but it is incredibly artistic. Your attention to detail (e.g. shadowing for muscles in her leg) is impressive. |

Perfect! It's often difficult to maintain "photographic integrity" when you sit down with Photoshop but you've managed to accomplish this perfectly. ;) |

1997? I'd be interested to see a new version of the same thing to see what you've learned in 8 extra years of practice!

Don’t worry, the challenge is only a week and it takes me a lot longer than that and I also use parts of other images.

OK just give me 2 or 3 weeks, most of that time will be trying to find the original file, I must have hundreds of ART CD to go through. I need to come up with a file system.

Do you give photoshop tutorials? It's darn frustrating learning by trial and error, as I think there are many more errors for me. If I were to buy photoshop for dummies, that'd probably be too advanced.

This started as a CD cover, the client rejected it so I just took off with it.

The key is KISS “Keep It Simple Stupid” I don’t use channels or curves or a lot of color editing. Mostly layers smudge paint brush and very little clowning.

This is a more recent work for a CD cover. The group is JUGGERNOTT a heavy metal band. The only photo I used was a photo of an atomic bomb exploding, even that has no resemblance to the original photo.
This is a link to JUGGERNOTTs web site. //www.juggernott.com I did all the photography and designed the poster and all the art for the web.

sofap, I have a question regarding your approach to this sort of transformation.
I know you said you keep on changing it even after it is "done", but for the first round of "finished product", do you:
A) Make a bunch of very rough, sweeping changes, then keep on going over those repeatedly until you're happy?
or do you:
B) Work in very small steps at a time which are close to perfect and usually "finished", then move onto the next tiny change? |

I start with (A) and then make small changes to one part of the image or another. I like to start with the background and work out, the small details last.
This is something I have always done. Even before digital I would spend hours in the dark room working on the finished color or B&W prints. Back then it was very expensive to work that way so I was not able to do more than 20 to 30 pieces a year.
