This is a good idea, but I haven't become a member yet because I don't feel I am no where near as good as the photographers that are members. This gives me the chance to get better, with an open challenge a week.
I do like the idea of the open challenge having 6 ribbons, members 1,2,3. and a registered users 1,2,3.
Think it would be interesting. |
I'm not very good either but became a member anyway. I honestly became a member to support a site I like and not for the member challenges. I think I have only entered 2 or 3 since then.

I am new. I have found that the challenges are so very helpful as a learning tool and motivation to shoot something I may not ordinarily shoot. The challenge subjects as well as the comments and scoring motivate me to at least try to figure out how to âdo it better.â I have noticed that there are many levels of expertise as well as camera equipment. Perhaps having 2 (or more) divisions might help. Think about both divisions having the same challenge subject/rules: Example: If you have placed in the top 25 more than 4 times you would submit in division B otherwise submit in division A. or base the divisions on average scores. Example: Average score above 7 submit to division B, below 7 submit to division A. Just some thoughts. |

I think that is the key. |
Yeah, thats gonna happen. You should take a picture of that and enter it in the dreams challenge.

I really like the idea of limiting the number of challenge entries -- maybe both member and open -- to a certain number. I would say 300 max.
That would make it more challenging to get your picture in on time, and would easily solve the problem.
I have pulled my picture a few times when it got to deadline and I saw that there close to 500 entries. I just don't think you are going to ever get really good voting with that many entries. Voters get tired, and less focused on each picture.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

i totally agree with that..yeh i can vote my 20% but those other photos dont shuffle around enough for everyone to get a fair vote if its only 20%

[quote=muckpond] [quote=smilebig4me1x] [quote=muckpond] there was a great discussion about some similar issues just a few weeks ago:

There are some good ideas in this thread. I like the idea of having multiple challenges each week but only being able to enter one of them. This cuts down on the # of entries in each challenge and I'm more likely to find a challenge that suits my style. |

I agree with DannyM.
Having, say, 2 open challenges each week, and having members and no members choosing 1 of the 2 challenges to submit 1 photo to, would decrease the number of entries in each and increase their variety and interest during voting. Instead of facing 500 pictures of the same topic, (hopefully) voters would see that number reduced to half, having the possibility to vote only on 1 of the challenges or both (if they feel up to it). Also, photographers would have 2 different topics to choose from, having the possibility to submit to the one they feel more "connected" to, which could result in more higher quality photos in each challenge. |

There's a bit of a terminology problem here thatw as muddying the waters. It was suggested we have 2 "open challenges" a week, one for members and one for non-members. By definition an "open" challenge is open to everyone. I think the poster meant to say, "Let's have one advanced editing challenge and 2 basic editing challenges (1 for members and one for non-members) each week."
This would allow members the same ration of 2 challenges per week, but would split the very large "open" pool into two parts. On the downside, this would allow no means for non-members to rate themselves against the established "stars" of the site. On the upside, it might encourage non-members to join, just so they COULD compete head-to-head... Right now they can already do that. I wonder how many people don't join just because they feel they lack photoshop skills and don't think there's any reason to join because they "can't compete" in Advanced Editing challenges?
Oddly enough, I find that it takes MORE photoshop skill to prepare my entries in Basic than in Advanced, most of the time. Practically everything I want to accomplish in post-processing can be done in Basic, most of the time, but it's slow and cumbersome compared to much easier workflows when layer modes and selections/masks are permitted.

Regarding Robt's post, I agree for the most part. I find that a 'basic editing' challenge is more difficult in terms of post processing than advanced editing challenges. I am continually amazed by the inventiveness of the basic challenge entries and what they accomplish with such limited tools for editing.
