Okay....

So I just purchased a Canon 20D, 580EX Flash, and accessories and planning to purchase the Canon 70mm-200mm USM IS f/2.8. All and all I'll shortly have about $4,000 invested.

Now, the sad thing is the fact that there are evil people in this world. An entire $4,000 system could be gone *pOOf* by one burglar or mugger. So what do you all do for insuring your equipment.

I am going to look at putting it on my homeowner's policy. But many homeowner's insurance start to raise a fuss with regards to "professional" level equipment. Even still, that will cover "burglary" from my house. But what about a mugger? What about some guy walking up behind you with a gun and saying "hand over the camera, bud" ???

So I am curious what you all do?

CLARIFICATION: not looking to insure as business equip, just valuable personal property

Check out WPPI, they have an insurance program.

My Homeowner's policy also covers theft when my equipment is away from the house. I would check your policy. It may be covered.

Business equipment? That's different. You probably need a separate policy.

Homeowners will cover a lot of hobbist cameras, but when you get into pro equipment, you had better check, There will be limits, like in dollar amounts.

You may have to get a separate rider on your homeowner's insurance to cover your camera equipment. This is the same as if you have a special collection of coins, stamps etc. Jewelry is another thing that usually requires a separate rider.

I have a personal articles policy under my renter's insurance, so even if I break it, it's covered.

I just did mine through Renter's as well...It was an add-on and I haven't received my policy in the mail so I can't say how much extra it was.

One of the key things to look for is that it's not DEPRECIATED value
And make sure you either have the insurer inspect all the stuff, or, make sure you can prove to them that you indeed own the items, and that you can prove their value with receipts/appraisals.
