Hi,
I keep hearing about watermarks, and I have a thing on photoshop that does them, but I dont know what they are... or what they are for? so... what the heck are they?

I think a watermark is a semi-transparent copyright signature put across an image to prevent people using it. There might be another type of digital id too? |

This is a visible watermark, and is typically used for images displayed as stock images, as in my gallery at Shutterstock.
What you have in Photoshop is something called "DigiMarc" which is a supposedly INVISIBLE mark, which contains info about the file and photographer. If you register with DigiMarc you can get a customized watermark. The DigiMarc allows a stolen file to be identified, even though you can't see any difference. |

Note that Digimarc isn't an absolute protection: it is possible to detect and remove them if you know what you're doing. It does make a good casual signature, however, and in high resolution images the added noise generally isn't visible to the eye. |
