I originally started this thread in regards to the soft focus issues I've read about this lens. Here are some test shots. Please let me know what you think.
All shots taken @ f/2.8, and they are all 100% crops. See thumbnails for more detail. |

i have that lens also, its an amazing lens, the only thing i dont like about it is that it gets longer as the focal length get shorter, bt other than that is great, sharpness especially |

It is "OK" for 1100$ lens.
For the folks with lower budget Sigma 24-60 EX f2.8 is great alternative.

I thought it was a 'solid' lens like the 70-200, so it dosn't change length as you zoom?
Or is it just the filter thread that stays still, and the front element moves like the 17-40?
I ask this, as I thought the 24-70 was a sealed lens, and if it has a 'telescoping' front end that would be difficult to keep sealed, and would become a dust pump like some cheaper lenses.
Just curious, as this is one of the two lenses on my 'must have' list for when I've paid of my last purchase. :-).
Cheers, Me.

It's not a push/pull lens but the end does move in and out as you twist the zoom ring. That bothered me too since I do shoot alot in dusty conditions, I fianlly just said the hell with it and bought it anyways. It has now found a home as the second lens that I always have mounted on one of my cameras. |

Yeah I love the 24-70/2.8L, I do find it a little soft at times but it is a great lens built like a tank (taken a 5 foot fall without a scratch on my 20d). Although it's on the heavy end, it is my "walking around" lens or a close second as I really love my primes (35/2 or 50/1.8). The only lens I'm thinking might become my next favorite and need to buy (if it ends up being good enough and inexpensive enough) is the soon to be released sigma 30/1.4, It also would be my first non-Canon lens (if you don't count my 2x quantaray extender)

As I wrote in a related thread just a couple of minutes ago, I am finding some softness when shooting wide open, close in, particularly portraits. I'm now experimenting moving farther away from the subject or not using f/2.8 but moving narrower a bit on the aperture, and I think this is getting a bit better focus results. |

I think this lens is AWESOME! It is extremely sharp even @ f/2.8. Even with the 100% crops that I posted, all look really sharp to me. I noticed that when I had the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 it was not as sharp as this Canon is, IMO. |

Are you able to post some 100% crops from something in natural light, ISO100 and a faster shutter speed?
The reason I ask is that although the crops are OK I don't really thing they are that sharp...
Take a look at my crops in this Thread from a couple of other popular L lenses...
Cheers, Chris H.
edit: spelling bad. :-)

I would have to agree that those 100% crops don't seem so sharp they are ok but i guess you can make it even sharper... I don't own a lens like that but i think that it may be capable of doing better... try a newspaper shot... Or like kiwichris said an outside shot with faster shutter speed might make a better job... this is one of my lens that are on the wish list too... but i have seen many people post on threads saying it is a little soft and i want to get something that gives me free will to shoot sharp and neat images...
Hope to see more tests on it..
