I use Rayovac 15 minute rechargable NiMH batteries.
I like them because they only take 15 minutes to charge. When i'm out taking pictures and dont pay attention to how used up they are or forget to bring extra batteries, I can just find an electrical outlet and charge them right there. But when you're in a rush, 15 minutes can take a long time. Always bring an extra set of batteries and the charger.

Any disadvantages to the 15 min rechargables? Do they last as long, hold as much power at all?
I have the standard ones, which last well enough but take several eons to recharge.

I tend to carry a variety of batteries. NIMH work the best, I think, in cold weather (do alot of night photography). Lithion Ion last the longest, you can find 2500 mh lithion ion, nimh is more like 2050 mh, and alkaline are more like 1650 mh (relative to the brand). Lithion ion batteries are more expensive though. I also keep a bunch of alkalines in my bag for those just in case moments (save them because digital cameras and flashes need alot of juice, and what are dead to digital is still half full to you cd player or remotes...
You can find chargers too that have ciggerette lighter and dc power blocks with them (charge at home or in car on route to next shoot)

Actually, you can find 2700mAh NiMH batteries at B&H.
NiMH batteries need to be conditioned once or twice to reach maximum capacity, and lose about half their power over a period of a month or two, so they're really best for applications where you're charging frequently. There are a lot of different chargers available for NiMH batteries, as well, so odds are very good you'll find something that closely matches your needs and budget.
Lithium Ion batteries hold their charge longer when left unused, but have a fairly narrow temperature range that they really like. There's also not as many LiIon chargers to choose from. |

Walmart and Meijer sells 8 pack 2500mAH NiMH batteries for $17.99. I plan on picking up a pack after I pick up my speedlite 580X from FedEx today. |

Thanks everyone for the discussion. I think I'm going to go with the NiMH batteries.
I've found a 4-pack Energizer NiMH batteries with the charger for $29.99 at my grocery store. That means I should be able to find it elsewhere for less...
Thanks again, DPC!
Edit to add: these are 2200mAh batteries

walmart dude - i got a pack of 4 2300 or 2500mah ons for $6.73 last month.
I use nimh and have no probs. A wedding photog i know (for weddings anyway)buys one of those biog blocks of alkalines and changes them often - quicker flash recycle time he says.

Here's another good link from Steve's Digicams
I'll stop by Walmart to get my batteries, but I may shop elsewhere for the charger...
