I mentioned this in another thread but thought I would ask the question out right.
I have been trying to make a point of providing more detailed comments in the challenges as I find it both educational for me and Iâm hoping helpful for others. However Iâm noticing a lot of people donât check the âthis comment is helpful boxâ Not just for my comments but a lot of times for all the comments that they receive.
So Iâm thinking, would it be rude to send people a form letter, asking them why the comment was not helpful to them and if they had any suggestions on my commenting technique that would help me out in my future commenting endeavors? =) I realize that not all my comments are helpful and I certainly donât expect people to check it just to humour me. I would just like to establish why some of my comments are not helpful.
And I really donât want to make this into a big DPC issue â Iâm just curious.

Sometimes people forget to check the box.
Some never check the box.
Some hate your comments.
You'll never please all the people all the time.<not original
Some are just not into using the check box at all for their own reasons.
I think you'll find that most people have made more comments then recieved check marks.
:)
P.S. don't let that stop you from giving comments!!!

I took a look at the comments you left, and all but one of the few that I looked at were not helpful because the photographer doesn't mark any at all as helpful. The one I found that wasn't marked as helpful, when all others on the photo were, I think, because you had a different opinion than the photographer, and made a nice, constructive comment. But because they didn't like it, they didn't check it off as helpful. Or maybe they forgot, but I doubt it. |

I wouldn't take it too personally. I sometimes forget to check the box.
I view almost every comment as helpful unless they are cruel, sarcastic or pointless. For example, "this doesn't do it for me" falls into the pointless column because there, I gained nothing but most everything else is worth encouraging.
Again, I always mean to check the box and notice that sometimes I forget and go back all around to make certain that I've done so.
In many cases I'd bet that it's no more than an oversight.

I went and checked and out of the last 36 comments I made, 6 were 'not helpful'. 1/6 of my comments are not helpful. However, I got PM's from 2 of the 'not helpfuls' thanking me for the helpful commments. So I think that maybe people just forget to check the box? Would be nice if everyone did it so you could know your REAL percent of helpfuls. I spent a lot of time on them and would like to really know. But that will probably not happen. If you feel like you've offered the best advice you can give, then consider it helpful and move on. |

Speaking for myself only, sometimes I mark comments as helpful, but when I reopen the page, that mark has mysteriously disappeared. My computer seems to do some really strange things - sometimes comments get duplicated and land up on photos they had no connection to. It has made me reluctant to comment because a few times I've had PMs from people who cannot make sense of comments they should never had received. The consequence is that I won't be able to enter the invitational challenge. Just my luck it will be something I really want to enter.

I was going back looking at some photos from a recent challenge to see how my comments stacked up against the general consensus for select challenge entries. One of the photos I commented on had none of the comments (mine or anyone else's) marked as helpful. Took a look at this members profile and noticed that 0 comments had been made, 0 votes had been cast, yet this member has been around for almost a year and entered numerous challenges. Seems a bit selfish to me, but maybe this member has a valid reason - who knows.
Definitely, different strokes for different folks. |

In addition to what others have already commented on, I personally found that the sooner you leave a comment, the more likely it is to be marked helpful. Probably because as the challenge progresses, some people (myself included) tend to check up on the picture less and less. |

I don't know who this member is, so I can only speculate, but it is possible that, like me, this member has a really slow dial-up connection and high telephone charges for internet use. It is for this reason that I usually use the internet only late at night, also why I struggle to get through voting on some of the more popular challenges. Maybe this person simply cannot manage to do it the way I do.
Then again, maybe they are just selfish...

As someone who cares about the comment:helpful ratio, I try hard to get others to click that little 'helpful' box.
I think in order to appeal to the broadest range of people, it's best to leave a comment that is specific in three areas: positives, negatives, and recommendations. Not just, "I really like this picture", but "I like this picture because...".
If you take time to be critical about the picture, offer a suggestion for improvement or what you would have done differently.

I usually check most everything except "I don't get it" or "what?" or anything to that effect. Sometimes the comments people leave are quite strange... |
