I don't worry about score. Two of my lowest scoring posts have been used by 2 newspapers. Some people don't like the subject matter, some don't like the composition, etc. I make my living with photography and I very rarely have complaints from customers or editors. So i see this as a learning expereience on subjects I don't usually shoot.

Just have fun with it and learn. If you direct all your energy into pleasing just the voters on this site you will never grow enough to please a larger audience.

One difficulty I have is to determine whether an image is doing poorly because it lacks good quality or because it was viewed as not meeting the challenge theme in the eyes of the voters. I wish there were a way during voting for "does not meet challenge" tallies.

If anyone submits a shot to try and please anyone/everyone before pleasing themselves, this hobby/passion will eventually leave you without ambition, incentive, pride and happiness.

See my hand up? That's because it was starting to happen to me, and know a few others in these parts that were getting there or were there already.

Yes, this site is about competition. It's about winning. The Ribbon icons are not the only measurement of winning though. Winning can be in the heart, in personal satisfaction & growth, improvement through comraderie and honest virtual family members and their help.

Yes, we all want to be on the front page, and who wouldn't?
Funny thing about that front page from a first-person perspective though - when you aren't real happy with what is there, it leaves an empty spot and really messes with your feelings.

I have submitted and been there with shots that I honestly didn't think much of and didn't think they had a chance in hell of getting even in the upper 20%. Shots that I personally felt very happy with and moved me, end up far below where I would have predicted. Once in a while the two will be in the same place, and when that does, it's awesome!

Bottom line on this site, submit what YOU like and what means something inside of you. When it's recognized as such from even a few respected members here, it will mean far more than a virtual trinket.

Enter a new phase of DPC hopefully.

I take and enter my perception of the subject, When I dont put enough into it I suffer for it. I think that you have to be pretty Catholic in your approach though.

...wondering what that means. Feel guilty about your submission?

Seriously, I've not heard that expression and am curious what it means....

It should be catholic with a small 'c'. It means not limited to only a few things.

edit: Originally typed 'catholic' with a big 'c'. Duh.

I try to be a bit selective in that if I come up completely blank in terms of ideas for a challenge I won't bother shooting anything. But if I've actually gone to the trouble of taking a photo that meets a challenge I generally can't resist throwing it in there. Thankfully most of what I've come up with lately has been pretty well received :) - it really is hard to predict, I just won my first ribbon with a shot I wouldn't have submitted but for a last minute reworking. Even with the reworking I expected it to sit somewhere in the low sixes.

You just can't tell how people will react to your shots. If you like it.. submit it. You never know.
