As you know this is the camera i have and i was wondering if anyone knew if i can override anything on this camera. For example: my entry to free study, i got a few comments on the DOF saying it would be better if it were deeper. Can I do this sort of thing with this camera? I have read the manual and i dont think i can, unless you guys know something i dont.

i believe that if you set it to a landscape mode it will use a smaller aperature and gain DOF

doing that usually causes me to have to use a tripod because the light is cut down.
i think that the difference will be noticable but not sure if it will do as much as you want |

I think in your flower shot for example, you want LESS depth of field (ie a larger aperture). If you have the option of choosing macro mode, usually that will select a larger aperture (numerically lower) and give you the result you want. |

Actually, looking at a review, it appears you do have a Macro Mode (somewhere in the Setup Menu) -- your largest aperture is F2.8 (zoomed all the way out) and F4.9 (zoomed all the way in). Your closest focusing distance is 1.6 inches. I'd say in macro mode, at 1.6 inches, you should get a little lower DOF. If it's an advance challenge, you can always add some grassian blur outward from where the point of focus is. |

Holy moses that's some manual for that thing...they don't even use the term "Depth of Field" in the book.
Page 35 of your manual...I think you are going to want to experiment with this "Scene" modes to achieve some of the things we do with I dSLRs.
For your shot here I would try either Party/Indoor for a longer dof...and I might even try the close-up mode to see just how shallow the dof is there...(personally I would choose that later and blur the background of your shot)
The comments you received seem to be that the stemen was not sharp from the tip to where it disappears into the flower, which really is a tough one to pull off.
Looking at your shot closer it may be as simple as changing your focus point...the tip of the stemen is out of focus the flower is sharp and the background seems to be sharp.
Take the same shot again but focus on the tip of the stemen and it and the flower should be in focus and the background should get a little blurry satisfying two seperate comments that you received.
ED: bet you thought I was going to say typo...you are correct.
