I decided to sit out of this challenge... I am unable to come up with a photo suitable for it and do not have the energy to work until deadline tonight =) I would really appreciate it if you can comment on these two photos... the eye was going to be my submission and the other one I was thinking of replacing it with. Then I decided to put none in.

Feels strange... after last night I have no entries... I'm missing that update button! haha.

Thanks a bunch!!!

2 or 3 color shot would be ok !

I didn't enter mine either

I didn't enter this because the quality obviously sucks, but I thought it was a funny capture. This is my 4 year old boy going on 18. Don't know who the girl and other people are.

Edit, I didn't take this for the challenge, it just happened that way.

Given that the challenge description is "Create an image where your subject is the strong point of the image, but only occupying a very small portion of the image space.", I don't see any of these 3 images as being particulalrly on-topic, actually. I like the eyeball shot quite a lot though, in a grainy/funky sort of way.

I think the pupil of the eye meets the standard.

What do we define as a "very small small portion" ?

That's the 64-dollar question, isn't it? Arguably, the pupil of the eye does meet this criterion, depends on the voter for sure.

I figured the eye shot was borderline because some would know I am talking about teh reflection in the eyes, however, at a glance it looks like the subject is taking half of the photo instead of a small part. And we know that most voters do not give most photos a second glance or do not give the benefit of the doubt. The second shot was an attempt to do something... but then I gave up.

Marc - I think the shot is very well suited. I cropped more and cloned out some objects - Advanced Editing, I know - but just to show my idea of what a decent, fitting entry would be...

I love these kind of shots, by the way!

Edit: FWIW - My calculations put the subject at 5.2% of the image

Ken, that's a great job. Those distractions bothered me too. Yours is definitely more minimalism. Thanks!

The eye would get an 8 or 9 from me. Great shot.

Thanks! Do you think the eye shot would have been scored low because the reflection was not of anything specific?
04/27/2005 12:18:21 AM · #13
figured this one would get shot down just because it was a tack (sick of tacks?)
REALLY debated on this one but thought my lemon was too large! Oy vey!

Would've entered that one but it was a day too early. Tried to retake the shot today but the horse was too busy eating and not cooperating.

Well, I don't think if it would have mattered if you entered a minimalist image or not. I've looked through the entries and haven't found one yet. :-D

Many submissions conform to the image description, but the topic itself appears to have had no bearing on the choices made. I'm amazed at the number of images which represent everything anti-polar to the minimalist spirit.

Good thing I'm such a sucker for good photos or I would have to be fettered and put into irons until it's all over. ;-)

The problem with the challenge description is that it doesn't go into the elemental reduction portion of minimalism. It just defines it via subject size.

Mais oui. It was also rebelling against a mode of emotionalized seeing and rendering, not exactly a platform for portraitists and aesthetes.

You really never know. Even if you get a few people in the forums to say they'd have voter the alternate higher doesn't mean it would've done better.

Do what I do and get someone else (spouse, coworker, etc.) to pick the entry from your finalists and if it does badly, blame them. ;-)

Making a subject small is one thing. Being able to isolate it and force a viewer to focus on it is another. Even if you took a picture of a puppy's head and focused on the eye, if enough of the face were recognizable then it'd detract from your subject. It'd become a face instead of an eye. That's where compositional factors come into play - position, crop, color, contrast, etc.

I wish I were closer to home so I could retake that shot.
