Lately I've been very score oriented. After as string of crappy shots that I shouldn't have entered, I've finally had a turn for the better. My goal has been to get my average score back above 5.5. I know that this is kind of vane but that's what I've been trying to do.
The poll question is this:
If you have a shot that you really like and believe it fits the challenge, but are unsure how the voters will take it do you enter or not?
04/26/2005 11:01:55 PM · #2
Always. I basically pay no attention to what the voters might think, since I learned early on i couldn't predict them anyway. I just go with what feels sweet to me. And my avreage shows it :-)

Enter it....
if you like it, Enter it.
I struggle because I don't like my work enough and I know I can always do it different or better. It's me I have a hard time convincing it's good enough.

I still lack confidence in my abilities and so the vote tally seems to be the measuring stick for me. My goal for this year is to actually market my skills as I become more confident in being able to produce a consistent product. Scores will assist me in that. However, that said, once I feel confident in the above, I will feel more inclined to go with what moves me as I will have coupled internally the technical skills and artistic growth with the things which already appeal to me.

I'll definitely enter it, I'd rather have a small group of people appreciating my photos for what they are. I wouldn't want to make PMAs (Photos of Mass Appeal) that I don't like just to please everyone.

At 11:08 I still can't decide between two shots I like/dislike equally for various reasons. Do I enter anyway so I can push the update button? :0

My current goal is to do better than the lowest rated challenge shot visible on my profile. Right now, 5.3 would do it.

I'll definitely enter it. I have entered a few photos that I really, really liked that didn't do so well. In the end, from the comments, I learned a ton about why yes, it was possibly a good photo, but here is what would make it generally appealing, or here is a different perspective or idea. Extremely valuable, much more so than a high score on a given challenge.

Okay. I lied. I want a ribbon.

That is what I did in the past and what recently I've reverted back to. My dilema this time is that I really like the shot...

Nothin' wrong with that! :-)

Personnaly, I don't pay much attention to the scores as much as the comments. The challenges are the place to get your pictures seen because users participate a lot more. But I think a lot of them are rushed too look at them all. High votes usally go to the pictures that demonstrate very good skills right away... The average ones (those who need to commented on) usally don't push the voter to spend enough time looking at them. So when someone sends you comment, that means something... Numbers can't interpret that.

So challenges... Go! Have fun... Take risks!

If you want to have an avg. score of 5.5 then submit if you think the photo will score a 5.5 or more....thats what i have been doing lately to boost my avg. score ;)....but every once in a while you have to take a chance :)

If I REALLY liked one of them, there wouldn't be a problem... :)

I really didn't think this challenge would be difficult until I started trying to find something I liked. What I liked probably won't work, so I'm stuck with my 2nd and 3rd choice.

Oh well, 43 minutes to change my mind...

If you answer yes to any of the following questions then dont enter for the sake of your average.
- is it blurry?
- is the image low quality?
- is there an unidentifiable subject?
- is it a family shot and you like the picture because you care for the person?
- do you have blown out highlights?
- is it an artistic abstract?

thats all i could think of so far... if you didnt answer yes to any of the above you should be guaranteed at least above a 5.

Oh, I've already decided to leave it in, I'm just feelin' out what others do...

With 11 minutes to go, I changed my mind. Not the one I thought I liked, not the 2nd and 3rd choice which I thought had problems, but the underdog I forgot I had. It may not do great, but I like it. :)

Ah, if it were that easy! I've learned there are NO guarantees. I thought I had a pretty good(not anywhere great, but I liked it) entry for "In The Beginning." It passed the litmus test you give, and it scored miserably. But you know what, I still like it, and I'm glad I entered it.

So, in answer to the question, if I feel it meets the challenge, AND I LIKE IT, it gets entered.

I haven't been here long, and I'll admit, when I first started I was constantly tracking the scores on the hour, and letting them affect my mood. Hopefully, I'm getting better at handling the scores. Now, I still keep pretty close tabs on the score, but it doesn't seem to bother me as much (or so I tell myself!)

And Marjo, I too was disappointed in how the Cemetery challenge went. Thought I had a really good one there, and it just didn't go. But I still really like that one too.

Just wish I'd get more comments!

Moods on this topic change. it goes like this:

You conceive the ideal concept and from the start you know that there must be no error between conception and execution.

You are trying to meet the challenge, feel burnt out, but can't resist. You conceive and instead of aborting you go through execution. Image leaves a mixed feeling but what the hell, you go with it.

You are at a total loss and wait and wait and then the idea hits you but now time is not on your side and so you compromise and submit. Bad. You are unable to press the unsubmit. Gone...

You just feel like throwing something against the fan hoping it would stick. Rarely. lol

Yes, always. My scores reflect that pretty well, unfortunately. ;)
04/27/2005 01:07:06 AM · #23
Some of by best scores have come from photos that I was not at all sure about, some of my worst from photos that I really liked. I don't worry about it, this is for fun and learning, getting too wrapped up in the scores will take away from the fun part, at least for me.

If I like my picture and it meets the challenge - I put it in and don't worry about the score. One of my favorite pictures was in Best Friends and it did REALLY bad but it is still one of my favorite pictures. Sometimes, it turns out that one I like is also one lots of people like; sometimes not.

My picture in the Extreme Action challenge was over 7 and I found that more nerve wracking all week than having a picture in the 4.5 to 5.5 range. I was almost afraid to update because I felt sure it would drop like a stone all of a sudden.

It's nice when you do get a high score but low scores aren't that dreadful. Just think, if you didn't enter, no one would get to see your picture. It always seems so nice to me that over 200 people actually look at you picture while they vote on it.

I'm starting to have a change of heart regarding scores. I looked at them as a way to massage my ego, but when my scores weren't up to snuff, more often than not, I felt terrible. Now I'm thinking that if I really conceive or chase a shot, labor and sweat over the post production and put my heart and soul into it, I'm going to enter it even if I feel it falls short of my expectations.

I feel that the way to really learn is to enter challenges and learn why a photo did, or didn't, do well in the challenge. It should make you a stronger photographer in the long run, even if your ego takes some hits. The average score doesn't really mean much other than it gives you a guage as to how your image was perceived and received and you have to find out why in order to get the most from entering challenges.
