Arie,
Check out Bob's review of the Tamron here
//bobatkins.photo.net/photography/reviews/tamron_28_75.html
I think it'll serve your needs nicely till you can get a $800 L lens in the same range, plus if it is well kept, you can probably sell it for most of the cost of the lens.
I looked at the 70-200 f2.8 at f2.8, it's very sharp at the corners. Nice lens. Hope your's with the L lens and the Sigma came out nice as well.

I posted this earlier but I don't know if any LA people saw it. Kind of late notice, but if someone is looking for something to photograph on Sunday it might be interesting.

Thanks for posting that Roxanne. Sadly, I cannot go tomorrow (other plans), but I appreciate the link. Maybe some other LA area DPCers may want to go!!! :)

Hey everyone. Here is a three part question for everyone.
1. What is your favorite type of photography?
2. Why?
3. What lens do you prefer for that type of photography.
I'll start with me. It's portraits. I prefer staged more than candid, but I ejnoy both. Why? Because, it's more difficult for two photographers to come up with a same portrait shot, where as it is easier for two phtogs to come up with almost exact photos in other types of photography. A photographer interacts with his/her subject and this unique interaction is reflected in the subject's face. Plus I find humans more interesting to look at. I just got it but like to use the Canon 70-200 f2.8 for the nice bokeh at 2.8.

I love doing portraits too, but candid portraiture, in natural light, preferrably with shallow DoF. I also have a great interest in macro photography and nighttime photography (especially landscapes, see my recent entry in the Stock Photography II challenge).

Fritz,
No cheating. Favorite implies only one, so we'll assume outdoor candid portraits. You still haven't said why and what lens you like to use the most for it.

Hey everyone. Here is a three part question for everyone.
1. What is your favorite type of photography?
I would also have to say some form of Candid Portrait photography. See my gallery: //www.mirdonamy.com/photoalbumcat.php?albumName=phphotoart&cat=photopeople
2. Why?
It just shows life, at it's most beautiful & simplest form
3. What lens do you prefer for that type of photography.
I prefer Tom's Canon 70-200 f2.8. But, since I don't have that... I'll have to say my Canon 70-300mm craptacular zoom from 1999.

It seems like street candid portraits are winning. I thought a 12-24 Tokina would be good for getting "environmental portraits" near the 24mm end (about 40mm in 35mm format), but I'm starting to disagree. To get a decently sized subject, you have to literally get in their face, otherwise, they end up looking far away and small. If you get close, you get the big nose, barrel distortion look. My 28-235IS is too much of a zoom, so I'm looking into a 18-50 f2.8 EX by Sigma, also read reviews by Popular Photography on 16-35 f2.8L and 17-40 f4L and very surprisingly, they state poor corner sharpness till about f8 or higher. What gives?

1. Type: Night Photography
2. Why: Cool, blured lights, long exposure's, not something that you normaly see with your eyes.
3. Lens: Well I haven't tried night with my wide angle on my sony 'yet'.

The thing I dislike the most about night shots is carrying a tripod. I hate carrying gear, especially a cumbersome deviece like a tripod.
When I visited Las Vegas, I did really like night photography though.

Ha ha, you called me on it. I really would have to choose existing-light candids as my current favorite type of photography, though I wouldn't limit it to outdoors. I'm a great fan of indoor candids with fast glass.
I'd still never give up my macro lens though... wait, I can use that for candids too!

Fritz,
I'm surprised you didn't say the 70-200 f2.8IS, I think most who have it say that it's their favorite. Just got the 70-200 f2.8 non IS and I consider it my favorite lens, but everytime I go out with it, atleast someone notices it and mentions something about it, which I don't like. Anyone know how to paint a lens barrel black???

Hey Arie,
I got your messege yesterday, I was in LA Zoo already and phone reception was in and out so I didn't get your messege till I went home.
I rejoined Los Angeles Canon dSLR group and went to shoot with a couple guys.

Oh awesome! I need to get my membership there! My dad gave us money for our anniversary to get an LA Zoo membership. So, next time you go, let me know!
I am heading to Sedona in a few days. I can't wait! I'll post some photos when I get back :)

Raul, I'll have to show it to you on my computer, as I'm too cheap to pay to upload my pics to this site or the net. This time wasn't so good, too hot in midday, so animals were all hiding in the shade and asleep. Last time I went when it was hazy and early, all the animals were more active. That's the time to go. I tried the 70-200 f2.8L lens, it was too short. I like my Sigma 70-300 better, there is plenty of light and the extra 160mm of reach does make a big difference.

Was anybody here at the Lockheed "Family Day" up in Palmdale on Saturday? I saw at least 8 guys with 20d's there while watching the F-22 and F-16 fly-bys, and was just wondering if any of them were on this site. I didn't get much of a chance to talk to anybody with taking pics and watching my boy at the same time. |

That's cool Tom, no worries. Just like to see what Tom see's is all :). So you're building up quite a collection of lenses there :). I might go along with what you said with the two wide angle lenses since the Tokina is taking forever to get in stock and I rather like fixed lenses for some odd reason.
I'll have to keep that in mind next time I think about heading to the Zoo for a photo op :)

Raul,
No, I only recommended one wide, either an 8mm Peleng, or 16mm Zenitar. I'd vote for the Zenitar, less to defish by post processing, and cheaper.
As for the Tokina, looks like digitalfotoclub has them cheap, look here
//www.digitalfotoclub.com/sc/from-shopping.asp?id=964596188&rf=dt
I've six lenses, and just stopped myself from buying a Tamron 17-35 XR Di. I think the kit 18-55 is good enough, as I was testing it out yesterday, just gotta keep it at f8 or f11. According to popular photography, the Tokina seems to rate better optically than the Nikon 12-24, and it's about $400-500 less. What a bargain. If you've saved enough, check the abobe site, if not Zenitar/Peleng might serve your needs for now.

Greg & I were there. You may have seen me near the front of all the people when the planes were reving up. I can't remember what I was wearing, but you may have seen me. I was all over the place with my 20D :) My friend Michele Schanker works at Lockheed. Greg's friend Katey (spelling?) also works there!

How funny is that? what a small world! I was right there in front too, just to the right of the security van. You probably couldn't miss me... chubby guy in a white t-shirt, black backpack, with one of the few white lenses that I saw there, chasing around my 4 year old who was also taking pictures. The security guard was honking his horn at me when I ventured too far from his imaginary crowd-control line during one of the fly-by's. I was there with my Dad who works there.
Anyways, I uploaded some of my photos here if you want to see them, here's one and then click the "planes" link on the left to see more. They're 3rd generation resized for this site as I don't have my originals here at work, so they're not the best.
We drove up to Devil's Punchbowl afterwards but didn't go hiking in. That place looks pretty neat if you like to hike. Kind of like Vazquez and there are some small natural arches there. Here's a shot that I kind of like that I took on the way back down:

I saw you. I was admiring your lens from afar! I was sitting in the front row, on the floor with all the kids. What did your 4 year old look like? Maybe I was sitting by him/her. My husband asked, "so, were you mingling with the photographers?" For the first time, I said "no, I was being lazy and sitting on the floor with the kids." :) haha. I was about 8 feet from you if that... very close to the cop/security guy. When the van circled around, Greg & I took it's place in order to get some open air shots without people in our way. I'll be posting soon! :)

Here's a photo of my boy from the "Candids" challenge:
This is too funny! 8 Feet and I didn't even notice you! I was very pre-occupied I guess. Well, now you've seen me so you know why my profile photo is a statue! I can't stand photos of myself.
Can't wait to see your photos from Saturday.

Is this your boy? I was taking pix of the kids playing in the area. This boy was doing an 'airplane' and spinning around. He looks a bit like your boy. Could be! :)
