I was quite pleased with my image. I thought it should have gotten at least a 6.0, I never expected the win with such amazing images, but I thought I would score higher. I didn't really have any critiques as to why it was scoring so low, any ideas? This was my first time trying to catch sunset, water, and a subject all at the same time, so it was a true study for me. This study was all about color for me, I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for all who commented.

Sunset with same lighthouse

Sunset close to lighthouse, I think this is an oil drilling thing of some kind

I know this is blurry, or shaky, but I love it. It looked so great on the LCD screen, but was blurry when I got it home.

Sunrise at Pier

I think that the colors of the photo you submitted are soothing and lovely. But I think that the last of your outtakes is just breathtaking. Perhaps the difference is more in the mood of the picture as opposed to the subject or composition. But I feel that the last phot has both beautiful colors/shadows as well as an appealing composition. It just strikes me more.

I know that's kinda vague...I'm new at this :-) I'm a big sucker for sunsets and sunset photos. Hey....the should have a sunset challenge!

I like the one that you submitted alot, but I also like Sunrise at Pier quite a bit.

Would be a difficult choice.

I had a huge dilemma over those two photos.. I guess I entered the wrong one. I sent my images to several family members via email before the challenge and almost everyone like the lighthouse, so I entered it. I did have a blast shooting the pier. The birds were walking right up to me taking bread out of my hands, it was 5am, I was freezing.. it was wonderful hehe :)

I like the one you submitted, but they are all pretty good. Hard choices. I would like the Sunrise at the Pier the best if it didn't have the dark cloud merging with the end of the pier.

I did not enter the challenge, however for a while I was considering this photo...What do you think?

Personally I prefered the Sunrise at Pier best.
As for the challenge entry, I oculd offer my personal explanation:
it is a beautiful photo but somehow I just had enough of the same ole same ole sunset photos.
I mean, it's a gorgeous photo for itself, but there were so many sunsets at the free study that I just couldn't find anything unique in this one over the others, and it fell into mediocrity.
Perhaps in a different challenge, this would do much higher...

The submitted image, to me, while lovely and soothing, is basically "just another susnet" with nothing to set it apart within the genre. The composition is quite static, and that doesn't help at all. If the bird were a little larger and in the upper left quadrant that would make it much stronger.

Sunrise at the Pier, on the other hand, really sprakles in color and mood. had you leveled it up and submitted that I bet you'd have broken 6 with it...

They're all nice shots, though. The bar's really high in a Free Study.

I like it. Take out the white horse and you might have something for "Minimalism".

...after a second look, though, the fence post behind the white horse creates a rather interesting optical illusion. :P
