I'd have to agree, dark and noisy. Looks like it was taken with a camera phone.

I can't really help with what to change it to, but the expression and pose do not look like the model was at all comfortable. Portraits, imo, work better when the model is comfortable with the shot, and the 'get it over with' expression in this one just doesn't convey that. Getting a portrait model comfortable is tough, especially for a nude portrait.

Not all photos have to be pin sharp bright and breezy! This image is something that I like the way it is. Maybe a bit more contrast but apart from that I think its an excellent photo.

I dont mind the dark... not fond of the noisy....also, it looks as if she is putting a lot of weight on her hands... would like to see at least the hand on her lap in a "softer" position - the wrist is at an odd angle, and not so much weight on her other hand... if that makes sense... jmo, take it or leave it.... hope it helps

If I were you I'd get the tripod out and head over to that barn you used for the Abandoned Buildings challenge. See what time of day the light is best in their and you'd have an interesting background and could probably get some beautiful shots.

I like the darkness, too. A quick run thru Neat Image cleans up the noise nicely. I'm not a Photoshop guru, so I don't know how to accomplish the same thing there, but Irfanview has a gamma correction slider. Using that, & boosting the contrast a little, lightens the image up while still retaining a lot of the dark feel.

I think the noise is ok, it can help to create mood, but the photo is too dark. Also, it's my opinion that when it comes to portraiture (nude or other), facial expression is very important. Here, it looks as though you're going for a serious look - which i don't think works with this particular pose. It almost looks as though you're being forced into posing.

Perhaps the same expression, but with eye contact with the camera would much more appealing. I like eye contact with portraits, but I know that's a personal preference.

Also, the pose seems "scruntched up". You're thin and athletic looking, so I think you should try to show that a little more. Shooting from above makes you look small (ie ... like a little girl) in this case. Perhaps just a bit lower camera angle, straighted up your back, maybe show more legs as well (not sure exactly, as you can tell).

Perhaps someone with more experience can help better, this is just what I see. Hope this helps.

B&W images should include an ultimate white and ultimate black somewhere in the image. I love nude and bodyscape photography. The model (is it you?) seems relaxed. Difficult for us amateur photographers and amateur models.......clothed or nude. The only rule for nudes, I think, is that there are no rules. Good composition is the only must for me. I've got a couple of nudes in my portfolio, If youd care to take a look. I'd post them here, but, I'm not really sure how to do it. When I hit insert image, it wants a URL. The image "slat girl" was shot and posted last night KEEP SHOOTIN'. Nudes are a blast.

Ill give it a try here. hope it works. thanks. My wife is my model and has been for years. I've tried friends and friends of my children, (virtually all of them call us mom and dad) but it is very difficult. I get an image in my head, And it drives my nuts until I can get at least close to that image. Ter (my Wife) understands this, and is more patient with me and the demanding art form I love.

I know what you mean,,I am the same way it will drive me crazy til I get it figured out,,,
04/26/2005 03:33:42 PM · #20
Well - this is what I did - took your original and put it though neat imagae - then back to PS converted to lab colors - took the lightness tab and up'ed the contrast and backed down the brightness - USM .2 back to Grey Scale - went back to NI and processed it once more and walla! It would be much better to start with a bigger file - but there is a balance between taking the grain out and making you look plastic - but I did it quickly so I think it turned out for the 2 minutes of work...
04/26/2005 03:36:20 PM · #21
Wow it did,,I am impressed,,I am assuming you did this with photoshop,,
04/26/2005 03:38:43 PM · #22
Neat Image and Photoshop CS - Sounds more complicated than it really is ...
04/26/2005 03:49:51 PM · #23
what is the advantage of changing to lab color to adjust brightness and contrast?
04/26/2005 03:52:38 PM · #24
lol yes it does,,but I am sure your right,,,I deffintely need to get those.

Thanks
