I have discovered why my photos are coming out much softer than normal... when i convert them from Raw->Jpeg they get really soft... i use the canon software to convert the photos... are the settings on the software wrong or is not the program any good? please help me improve this.

Use DPP. I'd never dream of shooting RAW without it. Free on Canoneos.com, can be hard to find...

Not sure how the canon stuff works but in the Adobe CS RAW converter there is a selection for sharpening...there is probably one there somewhere that is set way to low. Hope it helps.

If you plan on editing afterwards I would suggest RAW -> tiff and only convert to jpeg once you are finished.

If you don't plan to edit afterwards then convert to the highest quality jpeg. The quality can be adjusted in the Canon software.

Raw is a digital negitave, it contains all the information you shot the photo with and allows you to "fix" or adjust these setting much easier...but they are huge files.

Then either convert to tiff and use your editing software to convert to jpeg or use different conversion software. The Canon software is very basic compared to others available.

I use PS CS but that might be overkill. Capture One offers different editions and has a trial version available. Also, I believe some people here use Bibble. I've never used that one.

A google search might be helpful to bring up other options and links to the ones I've mentioned.

edit: misplaced quote
