I am just asking one of the PC gurus here (and there are many of you!) what the Java Control Panel is and what is "does". I have noticed the icon down in my task tray lately and don't really know how I got it or what it does exactly. Thank you!

edit for typo

It runs java programs on your computer. Java is a programming language that runs independent of the operating system and so needs a runtime enviroment for its' programs to work. It could be an indication of spyware or a legitimate process so just try turning it off. Any program that needs it will run it automatically so it shouldn't matter.

Thank you. I can't find anywhere to "turn it off", only hide the icon. Any suggestions?

Thanks.
I have: About Java Technology; Go to Java.com; Open control panel; Open console; and Hide icon. I went through the control panel and console and didn't see a way to shut it down.

Which browser are you running? Check the menu options for the browser and you may find something to disable it with.

Also, it may be a process so you might be able to stop it by using the Task Manager (accessed via ctrl-alt-del then selecting it and selecting the processes tab). Look for something called java or javaw.

I use Firefox. Do you agree that I am safe in diabling it?

Yes. When you start your computer the next time check to see if it reappears. If it does then there's a program in your startup that uses it and to get rid of it for good you'll have to remove the offending program from the startup.

Go to start, click on the 'Run' button. Type msconfig then press enter.

Go to the tab called Startup and see if you can deselect it there. DON@T touch anything you aren't sure about.

the next time you start your computer there may be a dialog, just uncheck the tick box and carry on.

If it's not there then find someone to help, it's not worth listening to advice from people who aren't actually there, there are always way too many variables for anything but the most obvious solutions.
