I'd say install linux too, but maybe this too extreme straight away. What I suggest you is getting one of the "boot-from-cd" linux distros (ubuntu, knoppix...) and try to see how fast your system can go opening those pics. BTW, actually stopwatch the time it takes to do things don't rely on your appreciation.
While I assume linux is somehow quicker, my guess is that you can expect similar speed both from linux and windows in the very same box. If the speed is too different, you can think there is something wrong with your Windows install. I mean if it takes 5 (actual) seconds to open in one OS and 5 (actual) minutes on the other, there is something wrong with the latter for sure.
And you get a good taste of what linux can do for you along the way ;-) |

pitsaman,
Here's a few other things you can try just to get more speed out of your XP? box.
start/run/ type "msconfig"
within "msconfig" go to the Startup tab
Click off of anything that you know you don't need to load at startup. Lots of tray ICONS and other crap loads during startup that can bog your system down.
Next, right click on "my computer" or go to start/control panel/ and double click on system. Click on the "advanced" tab. Click on performance settings. click on "adjust for best performance" then go all the way to the bottom of the list and click on "use visual styles on windows and buttons" this will allow you to keep the XP look but you won't have all the other stuff bogging your sytem down. Another one I like to check on is "smooth edges of screen fonts. These two are the only real two you notice.
Next, Under Performance options again click on the "advanced" tab. Make sure both the top ones are checked on programs, then click on the "change" button under virtual memory. Your swap file should start at 3X the amount of RAM you have, so if you have 500Mb it should start at 1500M and go up to say 2500-3000. If you are lucky enough to have two HDDs then take all the swap file off of the C drive and put it on your other drive. When the swap file is on the C drive it creates a situation where the swap file is being accessed from the same location as the data, slows down the access time to info on the HDD. If it is on a differeant HDD then you can access the info on the HDD and use the swap file at the same time on the other HDD.
Next, to get really smooth looking fonts on your box do this,
Right click on your desktop and click properties or go to: start/settings/control panel and double click on display.
Within Dispaly properties click on "appearance" tab. then click on the "effects" button. click the "checkbox" labeled "Use the following method to smooth edges of screen fonts" Then hit the drop down menu and select "ClearType" Click OK and click OK again. Your fonts should look a lot better.
Hope these help you....

I'm not sure what you mean pitsaman? I was just trying to give you and everyone else some more things they can do to their computer to speed it up.

If it helps, I use a dual p3 system (server type) with raid scsi hard drives, 512 meg ram. It is faster than the current 2.4 gig p4's you can buy off the shelf. plus, when multitasking, it dont break a sweat. dual monitors are a big plus as well. |
