This is a good idea, I'm sure it will encourage many people to give more comments. From what I have read on some treads, I'm sure that many are not commenting because of that.

Long thread so I may have missed these questions. If I did, sorry. The second paragraph in the first post by ClubJuggle leads me to ask these two questions.

ClubJuggle second paragraph post: This challenge will be open to any member who, at the time they submit their entry, has made more comments than they have received.
Question 1: Lets say you are eligible to enter because you have made more comments than you received. When the challenge ends you now have more received comments than made, Do you get DQ'ed?

If you update your entry after submitting, you will need to be eligible at the time of update as well.

Question 2: Does this mean the "addictive update button"? if so could you be DQ'ed during the challenge if your 'comments made' falls below your 'comments received' after updating?

Question 1: No, it's based on your comment status at the time of submission.

Question 2: No, that means if you do some additional editing or change photos and re-submit an entry, you will still have to have eligible at the time of submitting the updated entry -- that you were eligible at the time of the original submission no longer counts.

I belive that the update in question refers to updating the photo submitted, so if you enter the competition and then change your mind and you upload another photo (or another edit of the same photo) you must also be eligible at the time of that update.
A I understand this you must only be eligible at the time of first upload (and subsequent uploads if you change your mind) but what the situation is after that is not important.

Thanks GeneralE for a fast response.

Remember it's my interpretation and not the official position of the challenge-makers : )

ahhh, GereralE, you're too quick

as a sidenote, I would be interesting to see how much impact this has on the total # of comments on the site.
Say for example that before the pre-announcment there were in all 100 000 comments and on avg 500 more a day, what effect did challeneg have on that.

I don't think anyone would benefit from my comments about shots...I try to vote on EVERYTHING and as I attempted to learn I try to broaden my voting criteria. However, I've NO technical skill and certainly no education with photography...and a simple..."nice photo/shot" doesn't benefit the person who put all that work and love into their hobby/profession...sooooooooooo

You don't have to comment on the technical aspect. Just say why you think it's a nice shot. Was it the colour, the position of the main subject or whatever that caught your eye?

If you don't feel comfortable doing it out loud (in writing) then just take an extra few seconds to contemplate an image that has grabbed you to try and figure out why. If anything it will probably make you look at your own images in a different way.

thanks cpanaioti...that's what I've done in past was use the image to think, ponder, contemplate, and learn....NOW that I'll have to miss a challenge entry if I don't comment...I'll have to be the cheering section I spose :-) gl to everyone and thanks for encouragement

Go nuts on my porfolio. I am just learning as much as I can, and have really thick skin..have fun...open to all..of course this is only in the interest of helping fellow members....I do what I can. [/quote]text

Ok, weird to quote myself I know..but thought I would mention that I got a load of honest perceptive comments from Zoomdak, not all favourable..but all were exceptionably helpful...kudos to Thomas for not rushing through to get his numbers, and giving honest feedback.

I think a much better "invitational" (as this one just created a comment race) would be a periodic "comment versus voting"...

Where periodically, any one who has commented on at least 10% of the photos they vote on will get to enter. This will have a long term affect of increasing commenting in photos as opposed to a short blitz.

:)

I just noticed this now. What a fantastic idea. I'm glad I have given double the comments I've received cuz I have a great idea!

I'm not aware that there's a stat that shows your ratio of comments-to-votes in challenges. We also comment on images outside challenges. Also, this does not account for the (in my case very substantial) number of comments that are made in threads rather than on the image pages themselves, as we work with each other on images in the forums.

Edit to add: This would also encourage making FEWER votes, and anyone who takes the time to vote on ALL the entries in EVERY challenge (as I do) will find him/herself having to make 30-50 comments per challenge just to meet that 10% figure. It would probably average out to something like 80 comments a week just to keep the 10% figure. The voting itself takes a LOT of time, and adding the comments on top of that would heavily favor those of us who don't have any lives outside DPC; that is, retired people like me or the independently wealthy. I'd guess I devote something like 30-40 hours a week, minimum, to hanging out here and participating at all levels. Here's my current stats, compiled since I joined 4 months ago:

Challenges Entered: 34
Votes Cast: 10257
Avg Vote Cast: 5.0350
Votes Received: 8895
Avg Vote Received: 5.1574
# Comments:Made: 1374
# Helpful: 1140
# Received: 616
Forum Posts: 2826

My comments to votes ratio is 13%, not taking into account that of my 2,826 forum posts perhaps a quarter or a fifth of them qualify as "comments"... And it's hard for me to imagine more than a handful of people being more active than I am on the site. That's 343 comments a month, or better than 10 a day, every day, since I've joined.

Robt.

I have 4 pics in my profile that were not submitted in challenges. If anyone would like to increase their comment status to enter the invitational, I don't see a few comments putting me over the limit to where I can't enter, and I always appreciate DP user's input. Feel free to comment away!

I'm not sure how well this addresses those who comment as part of Critique Club, or comments on non-challenge portfolio entries.

As always, please remember that abuse of any site feature will not be tolerated. Users who mass-comment by means such as cutting and pasting, or other means that do not indicate any effort to comment meaningfully on the entry, will be subject to suspension of site privileges. Please take this as an opportunity to spend some time providing valuable and specific feedback, rather than meaningless one- or two-word comments.

Just a quick reminder to everyone that the purpose of the current Invitational challenge is to encourage meaningful comments.

So far we have identified two individual who have run afoul of the above-quoted guidelines. One of those users has worked with us to resolve the issue and the comments in question have been removed. The other chose not to do so and has been suspended. I ask that if you know who these people are, don't drag names into this -- I'm not posting this to smear anyone's name.

If there is anyone who was not aware of these guidelines and feels they may have accidentally violated them, please contact myself or any member of Site Council so we can work together to resolve the issue.

Likewise, if anyone is aware of a user who is abusing the system to gain eligibility for the Invitational, please contact us so we can address the issue.

Most importantly, the vast majority of those participating are doing so constructively and in the spirit with which this challenge was intended -- which is no surprise given the supportive community we have here. A sincere thank you goes to everyone who has helped to make this the case.

Thanks, and good luck to everyone who participates in this challenge!

-Terry

Good Job SC in keeping this in check. It is always a shame to see people abuse the system.
