Interesting to go to Photos | Browse now - where there used to be about one comment every two hours ... |
But all those photos are from people´s portfolios and not in any challenge!? |
Whoops! Didn't notice e301's suggestion. (Slow on the draw, I guess.)
I don't believe it matters where the photos come from--just comment on anything that turns you on. |

Looks like I opened a can of worms with no "nice shot" comments. I done this when I first came to this website but refuse to do it now. If it wasn't a nice shot I wouldn't have submitted it or put it in my portfolio for all to see. So if you feel like boosting your numbers to get in a challenge with just a few "nice shot" comments. I think you should see Clubjuggle's original post here.
As always, please remember that abuse of any site feature will not be tolerated. Users who mass-comment by means such as cutting and pasting, or other means that do not indicate any effort to comment meaningfully on the entry, will be subject to suspension of site privileges. Please take this as an opportunity to spend some time providing valuable and specific feedback, rather than meaningless one- or two-word comments.

I don't get to play.
For the longest time as a new member, I felt I wasn't qualified to comment.
Then finally I plucked up the courage. The positive comments I left were fine, nothing came of them, nothing happened.
But right from the start I got a number of unpleasant emails as soon as the comment was NOT a glowing pat on the back. So after treatment like that, I backed off again.
I don't see the point of ONLY commenting on the best photos. Yes it is nice to get that pat on the back, but surely the people with the not-so-good photos need comments more urgently.
I don't believe in sugar-coating negative criticism (even though I have been attempting to do exactly that) on a site that is MEANT for giving and receiving feedback, but my skin just isn't thick enough to put up with the abuse.
So here I am - caught between a rock and a hard place.
And not allowed to play |

If you can adopt the same thick skin towards people's responses as you suggest people take towards the comments themselves, you can comment away. There are plenty of us who want to hear how our photos make you feel and how you think they can be improved. Those who don't ... well let it be their problem and not yours. If they send you an off-the-wall response, just ignore it.
I think part of the idea of doing this is both to get people writing, but more importantly, to "condition" people to receiving comments representing a variety of opinions.
I sympathize with your dilemma ... remember this is an "experimental" and extra challenge, and is not that likely to become a regular feature. |

Wow... textbook example.
Those comments were made back in 2003 so we probably won't be pursuing that for suspension, but if someone did something like that now to get into the invitational challenge, that would definitely earn them a week or two away from DPC.

Ah, I liked that guy :-) wasn't he part of some group where some of their course-work was to leave x number of comments here?

Just out of curiosity, last night when I first read about this challenge, I reviewed the records of all 14 SC members.
5 were qualified to enter this invitational.
4 were not anywhere near close enough to qualify.
2 were close enough that they can qualify fairly easily.
3 will be able to qualify with a lot of effort.
There are lots of different ways for people to be contributors to the site. Commenting on photos is only one of those ways.

That`s right lol. If he joined now he could qualify for this challenge.
I don`t think i`m gonna qualify and i`m going to be away all the bank holiday weekend. If i knew how long the challenge would be open for i might go for it.
Will this be a week long challenge?

To be honest, we haven't checked.

It might be interesting to know how many people qualify after this announcement. |
I've checked with Langdon and there is no easy way to calculate this site-wide. Wo do not store the number of comments made and received for each user, but rather calculate it when your profile is displayed. To run such a calculation for the entire site at once is impractical.
Sorry,
Terry

Guess I can look forward to this new challenge. I wonder though, this is quite a departure from anything we've seen (as far as I know). Why? |

Looks like I won't make it :-(
Since I joined I scored every photos in every challenge, but I admit that I do not comment a lot, because I don't consider myself to have enough experiment but mainly because of the language. English is not my mother tongue, and often, I'm scare that I will not be able to say exactly what i want to mean.

I wouldn't let that stop you, Alain. Most Americans have problems with their english and that doesn't stop them from commenting. I think folks will be able to figure out what you mean. Just say "Nice shot" ;-) |

Ken, for a while I did comments with short phrases like you said "nice shot" or something similar. But I did read so many treads that mention that many peoples don't like these kinds of comments, so I stoped giving them. Myself, I enjoy any comments I get, bad or good... it tells me that at least my picture was looked at, and it made something to someone enough that he or she took the time to write something about a picture I took.

My advice would be to give to others what you enjoy receiving yourself - sort of like the golden rule. As far as the people yakking about it in the forums - don't sweat it - they (we) are probably the noisy minority.
I do think it might be helpful to run a poll to find out how many people appreciate simple comments like "Nice shot". |

it just is hard to phrase .. "what are you trying to SAY??" .
