I believe this site is just as much about learning how to take good photos as it is learning how to rate photography.

I know we can rate comments as either helpful or not helpful. I think it would be helpful to rate them on a more specific scale.

10. You are a genius and I value your input.
9. You just taught me something.
8. Wow, your right I'll watch that next time.
7. I guess your right.
6. Thanks for a compliment, but is not necessarily helpful (except to my ego).
5. I see your point but I disagree.
4. You have no idea what you are talking about.
3. Just because you have a opinion does not mean it is worth leaving.
2. Insults don't count as comments.
1. You should cut off your fingers.

Agree, Disagree, What would rating system be?

In an ideal world, I love this idea. As to its practical application, my main concern would be a tendency to rate down comments which suggested that the commenter did not like the photograph. This tends to happen on Photosig, and the result is that honest and critical comments are few and far between, with a tendency toward "pat-on-the back" comments instead.

How could we address this concern?

Why can't we add one simple thing? A check box box that says "thank you for your comment" that you can check instead of "This comment was helpful"

How about in addition to, so you could check one or the other or both.

But think about it - I can see the Rant posts now: "They didn't even say Thank You for my thoughful comment!" or "They thanked me for the comment but didn't think it was helpful! Wuz up wit dat??!"

Slow to change features is one of the very positive things about this site. :-)

Checking the comment box, as it is, is a mere courtesy. Of course, there are instances when one may not wish to extend any courtesy. Courtesy is nice, and, to me, that's about it.

The statistics reflecting the number of times photographers have extended a little courtesy, also, means very little, considering why we are here.

But every now and then, I receive a comment which proves to me that the writer has looked at the picture, that he has considered it carefully, that he is aware of a context of some sort. It can even happen, that the writer says what he does better than I could have via a photo, and in a tone which is both civil and sincere. The comment can be lengthly or it can come as a one-liner, perfectly placed and poised.

These are the comments I do value. Are they helpful? -Hardly, they're exquisite. Yet they usually come from people whose immensely proliferated interest is not motivated by a statistic or some sort of personal gratification. Their interests, apparently, do not (and cannot) extend to any measure of quantity.

To mark such an effort or poise as 'helpful' by checking a dime-a-dozen box would be an understatement, if not an offense. All I can do is acknowledge receipt by PM and bow. After all, it's the spirit of people like this which keeps me here.
