Good point Ed. I just might do that. Not that I need more comments:

but one of my goals for 2005 at DPC is to leave more helpful comments than I get, so I need to do about 30 (to get 20 helpfuls) correct that imbalance. |

Congratulations Kelly. That's probably the biggest cash prize I have heard of a dpc member having a serious shot at winning. Even though you are fairly new here we are pround to have a finalist among our ranks. Let us know how you did when you return, and Good Luck! |

In a moment of true generosity, I am offering my entire portfolio for those in need of making comments...if you could focus on the one's so far ignored, and offer real insight then I'm sure admin will let you enter as a goodwill gesture.
A less generous idea, would be to offer EVERYONE's in the LEAST commented photo section..let's face it tons of nice shot comments in the challenges isn't going to do anyone any good. |

But I am so far ahead of the game you all are more than welcome to use mine to get some comments in. Although bucket has a good idea to go to the least commented images first. If you want to leave a comment for me or someone else do us all a favor though and don't just type in "nice image" or "great shot" I will not mark it helpful. Give us another pair of eyes tell us how to improve. I think what this challenge is about is rewarding thouse that take time to leave further insight to our fellow photographers. I feel like we are all family here so lets take the time to help each other. I never see anyone comment on a blue ribbon winnner saying you suck I should have won. We always seem to congratulate each other so lets help each other out.

i think this is a great idea to pre-qualify for the challenge. thanks for listening and responding to the various "complaint" threads that have been running around. this accomplishes two things: increases the number of comments made, and (possibly) filters the number of people who are eligible for a challenge.
i would like to see more of this kind of thing in the future. |

You know for me it's not the commenting that is the hard part - it's the voting. I always know what i want to say and I leave some pretty long comments, but voting I always second guess myself.

I would have like to see something more like whoever has double the amount of comments they have recieved can enter.
Maybe we can thro a catch into it as wel and say that all who enter HAVE to comment on all the photos but extend the dealine to like 2 weeks for example.

"unless you are inspired to do so by the image. Don't do it just so you can make a quota to get in an invitational challenge."
-jmsetzler (in another thread - Please don't comment on my photos...)
I haven't made many comments in the past for a couple of reasons. First, as a beginning photographer I don't know that I know enough to make comments that are very helpful or insightful. Secondly, people often write that they don't want a "nice shot" comment.
This upcoming challenge is trying to encourage people to make comments and at the same time one of the site's experienced photographers is telling people to only leave inspired comments. I started trying to write more comments, but after seeing John's thread I guess I shouldn't.
Oh well... Thanks to everyone who has left me comments. (And I don't mind the "nice shot" comments.)

ANY comment is good in my opinion, it at least lets you know that someone took the time to look at your photo and tell you about it! So comment on.

Just because one person said they don't want comments is no reason for you to not write some. I do agree that "nice shot" is a worthless comment - at least say why you think it is a nice shot. what do you like about it? color, composition, balance? did it make you laugh or smile?
You don't have to be an expert to offer a comment - just say what you see or feel.
same thing with critical comments - if you are honest, the comment will (generally) be well received.

If you're looking for some photos to comment on, you might try this collection: Site photos with least comments
It should be a fairly "safe" group to work with. |

As been stated before in this thread and elsewhere, you dont need to know anything about photography in order to leave comments. Sometimes knowing something about photography can be a bad thing. You may not know why you like or dislike something but telling the photographer can still help them. A 'nice shot' comment doesnt really say they like the shot. A few extra words can be helpful, ie 'Nice shot, I especially like the X' whether it be light, color, background, or subject matter.

No matter what it is, if you're only doing something for the numbers then you're doing it for the wrong reasons.
Originally posted by Zippy: I started trying to write more comments, but after seeing John's thread I guess I shouldn't. |
Why should his opinion make a difference whether you comment or not? Do you only leave comments such as 'nice shot'? |
