Arie,
When are you getting your camera tomorrow?
04/22/2005 01:21:25 AM · #27
Bobby is picking it up sometime during the day. I am temping right now so I can't go myself (or test it). I am going to have him test it to the best of his ability. I am feeling sick (sore throat). I have a birthday party tomorrow night and Saturday night! I am overbooked! I still want to go out and play though, so if I am feeling better, let's go out for 2 or 3 hours Saturday afternoon! If you are up for it. :) PS. Anymore we talk about this should be in PM or another thread. Hee hee! I am breaking my own rules. Oops!

Hope you get better Arie and that your camera comes back better than ever :). *hope you guys have fun on saturday* oh whoops, wasn't supposed to mention that. Hows goes the temp job Arie?

Now on the Snake topic.. hmmm *get away from the cougar honey,.. *child but its such a pretty kitty.. I wanna pet it.. come here kitty kitty kitty.. -That goes to say where were the parents? who lets their kids run about a field in a desert habitat?

-Tom how were you able to get the Tokina? Where'd you purchase from I also want to get a wide angle :). Maybe you can save some pics and bring on the Meet for the Queen Mary.

-Arie yea a nice tele would have been good for that snake, our snake-whisperer methods only seem to work on certain reptiles :). So here's what we do.. I'll destract John and switch his 100-400 IS with some styrofoam cups..

Hey Raul,
Yes, I got the Tokina, got it from B&H photovideo. I've tested it, a bit of CA but otherwise a nice lens. It's very wide, so you got to get close to an object to take pictures, something I had to get used to. I'd recommend it for your Nikon. Cheaper option is to get a Zenitar 16mm or the Peleng 8mm fish eyes. They are about $150/180 respectively, from Russia, and use manual focus only. Very cheap alternative. I think the Zenitar would be good for your needs right now. You don't want to spend over $500 for an occassional lens unless you really want to.
BTW, Nikon also has a firmware update for your camera as well.
Give me your e-mail address and I'll send you some pic's with the Tokina to review.

I shoot mainly landscapes and what not so I think it'll be a good investment and my kit lens never seems to cut. Thanks for the heads up with the other lenses.

Thanks for the headsup with the firmware, I'll do that when i get home.

Raul,
No problems, I'd still consider the Zenitar if you are strapped for cash. It is a fisheye lens and you may have to defish it with software though, where as the Tokina is not a fisheye lens and has less distortion. If you send me your e-mail account, I'll send you some landscape type shots I took with the Tokina.

cash.. well when they are finally aviable(<--whats that? what am i on :) *available* i'll have enough saved for it :). I PM'd you my email. If you didn't get it i'll PM it again.

Edit: making fun of myself :D

Wow, I've been so out of it lately, I didn't even know this thread started. It's supposed to rain this weekend because I washed my car, of course. But I want to get out more often but usually I don't have time. Anyway, glad to see this thread and I am watching it. :)

Raul,
I e-mailed you some pics to evaluate the Tokina.

Thanks Tom I'll check them out when i get home.

I think when we go to the Queen Mary, we should stick together instead of wondering off. It'll allow us to converse (share tips) and also we don't run around the ship looking for stragglers. Some parts of the ship are actually dark and spooky. Which reminds me, may want to consider bringing a flash for indoor shots.
Arie, I'm also collecting nice metal drug rep pens to auction off to get change for carpool parking etc. Let me know if you want them, or everyone is going to get some Viagra pens when we next meet.

Um.... you mean... If I go with youz guyz.... I get to have my very own viagra pen?
04/22/2005 08:25:45 PM · #40
Gringo,
Sorry for the confusion, I get a lot of drug rep pens that I normally turn down. But some pens are nice and actually sell on eBay for about $5. I've collected about two dozen nice pens (almost all Viagra pens) and am willing to donate to sell online, etc. to raise money so that when we car pool or things like that we can pay for parking and stuff like that from the proceeds. You can bring whatever pen you like ;) But if we aren't going to sell those, I'm just gonna give them away to people.
BTW, our next trip is on 5/21 to Queen Mary, we're working on getting free tickets ($23 value), so you'll be getting more than a free Viagra pen if you join us. Oops, Nikon people must pay.... ha ha just kidding.

I am in Saugus. or to the untrained Thomas Guide user, that would be Northern LA county, near Magic Mountain.

I would like to know if anyone would be interested in going to the Getty and taking pix, then maybe displaying our endeavors.

Hey, im heading to LA next week. (from Australia)

I am hoping that everyone just missed my thread "US trip" and will get back to me here.

Im after some sites to see, photo opps, and galleries or exebitions for my pro photographer friend and I.

OR, we would love to catch up/meet anyone going out on a shoot anywhere that we could possibly tag along with? Thats a big ask and maybe a long shot i know!

I have a meeting on over the weekend, and am trying to organise as much to do after as i can fit into the week, in very short time before leaving. The meeting is in Santa Babara, and we will be heading back to LA some time after that, depending on what i can organise to do between now and then and where.
I will have puter access there, so give me a yell any time if you have any offers or suggestions.

Thanks.

Rossco

Everywhere and nowhere at the same time! :) Nah, I've just been busy with other projects and work. Most of my free time is spent playing games (World of Warcraft is so addicting) or chatting with a new friend of mine. Regardless of my activity, it has not been photography related in the least bit. OK, that's a lie because I do discuss photography and techniques with her and she's even shown me some of her photos from a recent trip to the poppy fields.

Anyway, I do want to get back into DPC and I will. I just need to find the proper inspiration to do so. I check back here once in a while (reason I found this thread) and see the upcoming challenges. Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere! :)

I would, but not til June sadly. I can't believe my May has filled up!!! I have 2 weekends (Sedona), one at Queen Mary, and one in San Diego! Wow! We'll do a Getty get together in June. I'll post about it in a separate thread.

Cool.

Maybe we can even do some challenges within the thread while at the Getty. Just for organization sake.
IE= Architecture, Macro, Texture, B&W, blah, blah, blah........

Swinging Johnson and Rossco,
Maybe when Rossco gets here we can all go to Ghetty and shoot for a few hours. I've been there about 5 times over 3 years but it'll be interesting to see how others see Ghetty from their photographic eye.
Hey Rossco, when you get here PM me if you want to shoot. I'm usually working till 5PM, but weekends are good. If you are interested in good shooting locals in LA, may I recommend the Ghetty, Santa Monica Pier and 3rd street prominade, Olvera Street/downtown-Disney Concert Hall, La Brea Tar pits, Venice Beach, Universal Studios, and of course Hollywood to start you off?

Yeah sure, I'm in no hurry. Just want to play, and have a reason to get dirty.
04/23/2005 07:20:55 PM · #50
PM me with what days/nights you will be free to photograph, and I'll start a meet-up for you with DPCers :)
