If the performance of my copy is an accurate indication, it is a better lens than the 50/1.8, and as good as the Canon 50/1.4. I haven't tested it fully, but have been very impressed with the results of the testing I've done. I like to manually focus when at very wide aperture, to make sure that the part of the subject I want in focus is the part that IS in focus. My 10D does not seem to do that well with fast glass. The 20D is much better, BTW. The bokeh from this lens should be OK, probably not spectacular. It has a six-bladed iris with relatively straight blades, so the aperture is hexagonal.
It is, of course, manual focus and manual aperture, so you are restricted to shooting in Av mode. Part of what attracted me is the very small size. This thing is tiny next to the Canon 50/1.4.
I also wanted something I could reverse on my 100 macro and not worry about breaking, and this lens fits the bill perfectly. The small size is again an advantage, and I don't have the worries I had with reverse mounting the Canon lens (the front element of the Canon 50/1.4 extends and I'm not confident to use it much in reverse orientation, I'm afraid I'll damage it).
You can buy an M42-to-EOS adapter for anywhere from $20 to $75. I have this lens mounted on one of the inexpensive ones currently.
