Anyone knows of a good book that explains in detail the different concepts of digital imaging. I've been playing for a while in digital imaging software and learned by trial and error mostly, but I'd like to have more in depth knowledge of what are levels, curves, hue, saturation, etc... What do they represent what is the science behind all that?

Thanks
Seb

Are you looking more for a book that explains how the computer changes pixels or how to use levels, curves, etc?

I dont know any books that explain how it is done, but there are several books that explain how to use them. It depends on what software you are using, but there are books or websites for most.

The Photoshop Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelby is quite good.

Thanks moodville for your answer and your suggestion. I am mainly looking for something that explains me how to use it and something that explains the principle behind it (For example, how increasing the hue affects my image.) Like I said, I'm now pretty good using photoshop, but I don't quite understand as well as I would like why if I play with something it does that result. Maybe its just a matter of knowing what saturation, channels, curves, etc... really mean.

I would also be interested in knowing more in depth info on how the software does it, but that's not as important (and since it is a bit less usefull, I would probably prefer spending time out photographing than reading on how my software play with my image... ;-)).

Thanks a lot
Seb

To start you can not beat this book Adobe Photoshop CS - One on One. It comes with lessons and an interactive CD showing you step by step about level, curves, mask, extractions, color change, dodge, burn, etc. Very good. Over 2 hours of multimedia CD. You watch the lesson then go and read the lesson and then it has you to do a lesson. Great Book.

They have it in other versions of PS.
I also have 'The Photoshop CS Book for Photographers' by Scott Kelby but it assumes you have a general knowledge of PS already. And I have the book 'Photoshop CS bible' again another good book but it is for advanced PS users IMO. So for now the first book I told you about is, to me, the best if you are trying to learn what all the many tools in PS offers.
Hope this helps.

Digital Photography, Expert Techniques.
Milburn, O'Reilly Press.

One of the most useful primers I've found for serious amateur through pro. Not a beginner's book so much, but it covers things you really need to know from basic editing to image management.
