one of my dpc goals this year was to try to maintain a 3-1 ratio of comments given to comments received. i had been running a bit ahead, but lost ground over the past month. at the moment, i am dead on

Comments:
Made: 2880
Helpful: 2294
Received: 960

thanks to the free study:

Stats: You have rated 506 of 507 images (100%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 216 images (43%) in this challenge

i am going to try to comment on the rest of the free study, but can't make any promises. i do hope them comments i'm making are useful in someway, as i'm trying to do a bit more than say 'nice image'.

so...if anybody feels like throwing my ratio out of whack, please feel free to do so (or, at the very least, if i've commented on your free study, take a moment to go back and comment on a handful of other free study entries).

thanks for all ya'll's support!

btw, samtrundle, ya want to give me some company on this, or is it too late?

I also have tried to rate and comment almost every image in the Free Study. My comments, I hope, are useful for the photographers. I tried to be as descriptive as possible about why I liked/disliked the images.

I find that commenting on multiple images helps me determine what I find asthetically pleasing. This helps me focus on those subjects in my own compositions. In other words, my photography improves by looking at other photographers' work.

I'm intrigued to know, thinking of that: how do you cope with the images in which you really have no interest? The shots that I found bland were the hardest to comment on - the really bad and the really good are easy.

I never got a coment from you...

This may be my neglect for not entering a photo.

jim beam on the rocks ;-)

kidding aside, that's a good question. once you asked me to think about 'why a person took a particular shot.' along those lines, i try to think about 'why a person would enter a particular shot.'

i'm trying to discern what a someone might be looking for by entering a challenge: to improve their photography, or to improve competing in dpc-challenges, to improve in both ways, or, if they really need no help and are looking to score.

yes, it is easier to comment on ones where there is need for technical improvement either shooting or in post-processing. that gets you to the deep middle, the images that are basically ok, but not really exhibiting the 'wow' factor. here, i'm looking for ways of using the image at hand to help encourage 'seeing' a more competitive entry in the future. it also helps when the challenge is very broad--i would NEVER attempt something like this with the 'tacks' challenge...

;-)
