I give. I still can't figure out how to distinguish between the two, nor where to buy a non-USM model or a non-USM equiped kit. Oh well...

Phil: Note that Canon has subtly updated the Kit lens, but it's only cosmetic modifications, the actual glass / lens design is identical (still no USM here, although there was a USM lens on black kits in Europe and standard in Japan).

Are you (or more accurately, Phil) saying that BHPhoto is misrepresenting it's kits? Reaaaalllly?

Um, no.

If you look at the link Langdon provided earlier properly you will see, just below the Canon logo, that one clearly says "Digital Camera with Canon 18-55mm "USM" Lens" and the other clearly says "Digital Camera with Canon 18-55mm Lens".
If you look at the 350D kits on B&H you will also find USM and non-USM versions.

I you actually looked further (and properly) at the provided links, you will see that the "item includes" shows that there is NO lens provided. That is not the kit. The reason that it says "Digital Camera with Canon 18-55mm lens" is to clarify that it is not included. If you check the first link w/USM lens, you will find that there is NO VERBAGE under the picture - clarifying that the lens IS included.

Clear as mud?

Is it possible, just possible that the fact that the lens is missing from the "Item Includes" list is an error?

The lens is prominently displayed in the description on the front page Lang posted, and if you look at the same manufacturing number in the description; it is for the kit (including lens) at other retailers such as Adorama. I would imagine B&H would confirm this, but alas, they are closed.

//www.adorama.com/catalog.tpl?page=searchresults&searchinfo=9442A008

Incidentally, there is plenty of information on the web to support that there are indeed two versions of the 18-55mm, even if some say they are damn near identical in the end. For example:

//www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/efs_lenses.html

"You can't buy the original EF-S 18-55 without a Rebel body. The price is $170 for the USM lens. The "standard" (non-USM) version effectively cost $100 since that was the difference between the "body only" and "kit" prices. Since Canon don't mention any optical changes, it's reasonable to assume that the lens will perform identically to the non-USM version, which you can see on my EF-S 18-55/3.5-5.6 lens review page."

//www.robgalbraith.com/bins/event_page.asp?did=8/19/2004

"Canon USA, Canon Canada (and perhaps other regions as well) will also begin selling the USM version of the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens that has been part of the EOS Digital Rebel kit lens since that camera's debut in 2003. Up until now, neither the non-USM version (which is the version in the Rebel kit in North America and several other regions worldwide) or the USM version (which is the one bundled with the camera in Japan and possibly elsewhere too) has been available for purchase separate from the Digital Rebel. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM has an estimated street price of US$169 in the US."

You're missing my Canon EF 35-105mm 3.5-4.5 Zoom Lens.

How do you know that? Please note that the USM lens has no USM markings to my knowledge. I sure don't know anyone who has ordered one to check for sure. All the kit descriptions at BH describe the lens as USM.

It might have something to do with the loud whirring noise it makes when focussing...

I got my 300D kit about a year ago...in the US. It focuses quietly and very quickly. But I guess it is a bit louder than the lenses I have that are USM. I probably don't notice since there is so little distance that it has to travel, thus a very short whir. BTW I'm not saying it's a great lens - or anything close to it.

OK last post - honest - with a mea culpa.

non-USM

w/USM

Interestingly, there is no link to the nonUSM version for specs, etc. but there is to the USM version.

Extenders don't appear to be listed: Canon EF 1.4x II and Canon EF 2x.

I noticed that as well, but then thought - what would I do with them? Would I identify an image as being taken with an extender or the lens I used with the extender? Seems to me I would choose the latter...

True, dat. Although they certainly qualify as lenses, implementation for something like this would be a royal b!+¢4, LOL. Keeping track of multiple lenses and accessories would be a database nightmare. The same problem holds for "diopters", extension tubes (even though the contain no glass, they do modify the optical system) and filters.
IMO, like we once did for lenses, we'll just have to note them in the details.

Will it eventually be possible to browse via mount so we can just get a list of say Nikon or Canon lenses?

That would be ideal, but we've got to come up with a resolution for listing multiple mounts on the same lens... For now, checking off the manufacturers who make lenses for multiple cameras and searching for that camera manufacturer works well. Example.

Those of us with fixed glass won't be getting in the game. TCON-300 & MCON-35 here.

There are 3 canon 18-55 lenses...
the 'standard' one is only available as part of a kit (rebel 300D, 20D i think also).
THe 350D has the 'improved' 18-55. it is also only available as part of the kit.

The 18-55 USM lens is avaiable seperately. It is/was part of the Japanese and possibly european 300D, and I hear on the early black 300D's that went on sale in the US back in January (and cost $40 more than the silver ones...not for color, but for USM..).

I think (and will no doubt be corrected if i am wrong) but on USM lenses you can auto focus and then manual focus without putting the lens on maual focus mode. All non-usm lenses cannot be manual focused in AF mode.

I have a TCON17 that I use in front of my 50mm and 70-210 when a bit of extra reach is needed, quality is very good and I don't lose any light :)

50mm 1.8 + TCON17 = 85mm 1.8, I know that I'd rather have the real thing but this way I still get excellent results and save a lot of money which can in turn finance another lens :)

I noticed that there is no photo for the Zenitar 16mm. Feel free to use mine. BTW. It's an "MC" Zenitar. Sounds more badass. ;)
