Is it ok legally at a local park to take pictures of people you "dont" know playing basketball to practice shooting sports? I wanted to do that the other day but it jus seemed like one of the guys might come and smash my camera out of spite because he doesnt want his/her picture taken any thoughts?
thanks
Leon

If it is for personal use, ie practice shooting pics, then it should be fine. Of course it doesnt matter if it is legal or illegal for someone to not want to have their picture taken and ask you to stop... or smash your camera, although that would be illegal for him/her. :P

If they ask you not to take anymore pictures, you should stop, else its a public place, so there's no reason why not do it.

A friend of mine usually says he works for a scout, which eases the situation. Although its not true, i guess its a gateaway thing...who knows.

What I have found that seems to work, is if confronted and asked what you are taking pictures for, I just tell them I am taking a photography class and our "homework" was to try and photograph (fill in the blank).

In the current People challenge, a Mom came over and asked me what I was shooting for and for who. I simply stated that I was taking a photography class and we were were supposed to try and capture human emotion in a photograph that wasn't staged (candid).

So far, I have never had an issue or complaint, and often it sparks conversations in the process. If anyone ever objected though, I would respect their wishes and move on.

I found this interesting reading. This is a great question that I was just discussing today with my friend from Ritz Camera. I agree that being courteous and respectful is the right way to go.The Photographers Rights PDF link

Talk to them first. Those who don't want their picture taken will most likely say so.
