I don't think you can't buy it as a stand alone. |
You can buy a version of it that has a USM motor, but the non-USM version only comes bundled with a DSLR camera.
Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Autofocus Lens |
Not true, I believe. The kit lens is indeed the USM lens. Note that the lens referred to in the quote has the USM in parenthesis. Look at this to see that the kit lens is USM. Click on the "Item includes" tab.

jemison- I replied to your PM, but I figured I'd also reply here.. are you saying that this lens does not exist? Or just that the one that comes with the 300D is USM?
BHPhotoVideo has the 20d for sale with the USM 18-55 and with a non-USM 18-55 for 60 cheaper. I think both lenses need to be in our database. Anyone know for sure?

IIRC the Japanese 300D kit had the USM version of the lens, the US & European kits didn't.

Langdon, the link that you posted for the non-USM version of the D20 is indeed nonUSM...in fact it is total non-lens! That link is for the D20 without lens. The first is the w/lens kit - which is indeed the USM lens. I really don't think that the non-USM version of the 18-55mm EF-S lens exists.

How do you know that? Please note that the USM lens has no USM markings to my knowledge. I sure don't know anyone who has ordered one to check for sure. All the kit descriptions at BH describe the lens as USM.

That's weird because the title says "with Canon 18-55mm Lens" but it's not listed in the included list the way the USM lens is listed. |

From the DPreview announcement of the 350D (my emphasis)...
//www.dpreview.com/news/0502/05021704canon_eos350d.asp
Phil: Note that Canon has subtly updated the Kit lens, but it's only cosmetic modifications, the actual glass / lens design is identical (still no USM here, although there was a USM lens on black kits in Europe and standard in Japan).

That is describing the picture - which is of the body "with Canon 18-55mm Lens" shown on it for effect. Just like when someone shows a computer with monitor and in the fine print says "monitor not included". Just check the "Item included" tab and you will see no lens listed.

Are you (or more accurately, Phil) saying that BHPhoto is misrepresenting it's kits? Reaaaalllly?

Um, no.
If you look at the link Langdon provided earlier properly you will see, just below the Canon logo, that one clearly says "Digital Camera with Canon 18-55mm "USM" Lens" and the other clearly says "Digital Camera with Canon 18-55mm Lens".
If you look at the 350D kits on B&H you will also find USM and non-USM versions.

My USM lens says it on the lens cap.
Adorama also does not list the lens included with the 20d as a USM lens but does mark, in the title, USM on other lenses. |

The ONLY 18-55mm EF-S lens listed on the Canon site is this one.

It might have something to do with the loud whirring noise it makes when focussing... |

If you look at the link Langdon provided earlier properly you will see, just below the Canon logo, that one clearly says "Digital Camera with Canon 18-55mm "USM" Lens" and the other clearly says "Digital Camera with Canon 18-55mm Lens".

I you actually looked further (and properly) at the provided links, you will see that the "item includes" shows that there is NO lens provided. That is not the kit. The reason that it says "Digital Camera with Canon 18-55mm lens" is to clarify that it is not included. If you check the first link w/USM lens, you will find that there is NO VERBAGE under the picture - clarifying that the lens IS included.
Clear as mud?
