Flugent and I will be in Sedona around the same time, we are thinking of having a DPC Meet-Up on the day we overlap: May 7th for sunset shots. Any locals want to go? If so, will you be our guide? :)

I'd be interested barring any unseen events that might pop up~!
I just moved here in Sept. and have only been to Sedona five times and it was mostly fishing with my husband or shopping. There are several hiking trails that I know of and they might lead us to some landscape/rock type shots. Also there are the 'Jeep' tours that will drive you around the area. Not sure of $. |

Great Justine, hope you can join us! I am thinking something free or under $5. I just would love to meet you all (AZ DPCers) and share a photo meet-up evening with you!

Cathedral Rock from Red Rock Park is a nice place to photograph around sunset:
Other rocks in the area to photograph can be found here:
Keep us posted on specifics for your trip as they become available.

Hmmmmmmm... wasn't that one of the places wiped out by the big winter floods they had up there?... Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was. Man, that is too bad. Better bring your sleeping bag because it does get cold there after dark. :)

Just kidding about the flooding. Your place is no where near where that happened. :)

Even though Red Rock looks like it is accessible from Flugent's side in Oak Creek, I do not believe that it is. To get to Red Rock flugent has to drive all the way around past where you are staying to get there. The Chapel of the Holy Cross (that is the one set in the cleft of rocks) is probably more centered between the two of you.

Here’s my nickel tour of what to do in Sedona:
Avoid the jeep tour because they charge you $40-50/person to take you to places you can drive to yourself, more so if you have a rental car :) None of the roads they take you are beyond the capability of a standard SUV.
Hike the West Fork of Oak Creek canyon. If you do any hiking in Sedona, this is the hike to do. The hike starts by going through the ruins of a resort that went out of business in the 1930’s. The fireplace, chicken coops, pool, garden and meat locker are still there. All good photo ops. Note the apple trees there also. They are not native to the area, they were planted by the resort and still bear fruit today. The hike follows the creek and you could take it 14 miles, but most people only go a mile or two in (although the best parts are about 5 miles in). You’ll see plenty of red rock and be sure to bring a ND filter for water flow shots. Get there early because the parking lot fills up, and you’ll probably want to spend all day there.
I would recommend driving up Schnebly Hill Road and stopping anywhere it looks interesting. Last time I was up there, the road was closed at the vista, so if you see a road closed sign at the start of the road, just drive around it. The Vista is about 5 miles in and offers a spectacular view of Sedona. You might want to use a truck to get up there, unless you have a rental car.
Hike to Vultee Arch and/or Boyton Canyon, both hikes are about 5 miles round trip. Vultee Arch is a pretty big Redrock Arch discovered while looking for a plane crash (Vultee was the pilot). Boyton Canyon is a pretty plain hike, but it ends at a spectacular canyon view. I can get you directions to the trailhead if you need them.
Go to Cresent Moon Park (Steve called it Red Rock Park). I hate giving this place out because most people that come to Sedona don’t know about it. My last challenge photo was taken on the road to the park (shameless plug to get people to look at my last challenge photo).
Drive up to the airport, just because it's probably the coolest airport around and the views are good on the way up. The Airport is on a mesa and pilots say it's like landing on a aircraft carrier that isn't moving. The restaurant up there is good for breakfast. If you are at all into flying, take the open cockpit biplane ride! It’s well worth the money and there is no better way to see Sedona. Go before lunch and tell your pilot you’re looking for a good time. The biplanes are fully acrobatic capable and they will give you the ride of your life! (I've done it twice now)
Troyas is my favorite resturant in Sedona. Great Sicilian food (about the same as Italian).
You'll be about a 2 hour drive from the south rim of the grand canyon. Well worth a day trip if you've never been there. If you were a hiker you could spend the whole wek there.
Go to Jerome! It's about an hour away. It's an 1800's mining town that has been kept pretty authentic. After going to Jerome, you may want to go on to Prescott if you are at all interested in the old west. The drive through this area is spectacular also. Have a beer in one of the saloons on Whiskey Row in Prescott and stop at Gurley St Grill for lunch. If you like antique shopping, you can spend a week in Prescott. Watson Lake in Prescott is also well worth a stop and some exploring. If you canoe, it’s one of the best canoeing lakes in the country and there is usually a guy there renting canoes and kayaks on the weekends.
Go see Chapel on the rock.
Take the drive up 89A through Oak Creek Canyon. Probably the most scenic road I've driven.
Slide Rock State park is worth stoping at also. If it's a warm day, bring your swimsuit.
Let me know if you need any directions to these places.

Note: Red Rock State Park is not Red Rock Crossing. Red Rock State Park is nice, but if you are expecting Red Rock Crossing you'll be very diappointed.
There are two ways to get to Red Rock Crossing, one is via Cresent Moon Park, the other is not marked and via a residential road where you need to park about a 1/4 mile away and walk in. The views are better form Cresent Moon in my opinion, but the other side is free.

Would you mind sharing more detailed (street names, turns) information about how to get to this view of Cathedral Rock from Red Rock Crossing? I would be totally lost otherwise, unless you have an address (which I can mapquest) :)

Listen to Louddog... he knows more about photo opps in AZ than anyone on DPC and has hiked more of the trails.
I didn't even know there was a difference between Red Rock Crossing and Red Rock State Park. I thought they were the same. Maybe that is why I had to pay to get into Red Rock Crossing even though I have a State Parks free pass. :)

To get to Cresent Moon Park, get on 89 West heading out of Sedona. Look for brown forest service sign for Cresent Moon Park (it may say Ranch instead of park) and you'll make a left turn. It'll drive you past a school and through a few neighborhoods before the road deadends at the park. I think it's $7 per carload to get in so you'd be wise to meet up somewhere and carpool in.
From the free side you can't get the water at the base of the photo like Steve did, unless you want to wade across the river (waist deep a few weeks ago when I was there and very cold). I don't think the free side has signs to get to it. I think I found directions on the internet somewhere when I went. I couldn't get there today without directions.
I think Me and Tfaust might be joining you on the 7th.
Thanks Steve, but I still don't know anywhere near as much as I'd like to know.

I vote for the view of Cathedral Rock with the water in the foreground.
Glad to see all these good suggestions. Keep them coming!

Since I don't know Sedona... cathedral rock sounds good to me too! :) Any other suggestions?
Where can we meet outside the park so we can go in in one or two cars? Is there a coffee house nearby or restaurant?

Cathedral Rock from Red Rock Crossing will be a good place, but that is a sunset thing. If you want to meet up somewhere else to take Sedona photos and then move on to Red Rock Crossing as sunset approaches, that might make more of a day of it.
It's a 3 hour drive from Phoenix, so if people are going to drive up it will be for the whole day.
Maybe a leisurely hike in West Fork to start, then move on to Crescent Moon Park?
Here is a write up on West Fork, with a lot of hiker submited photos:
//hikearizona.com/decoder.php?ZTN=147
Note that it's very easy to keep you feet dry on this hike until you get to the three mile point (where you have no option other then jumping in).

I have an idea... why don't the people from Phoenix come spend the day, but I meet up with you all (including flugent) at 4pm. I am just arriving in Sedona the night before. My husband is NOT a photographer and doesn't want to sit around all day waiting for me on Saturday. So, we agreed that i'd ditch him at the timeshare for 3 hours, but no more... I am sure you can understand, he doesn't want to join us nor does he want me gone our first realy day in Sedona.
So, wherever you are at 4pm, I can meet you so we can go to Red Rock Crossing together! Is that ok?
