I am going to break from what I consider proper form and ask two different questions in a single thread because I think they are closely related enough and the first person who reads this will probably answer them both.
1: The basic editing rules make mention of the use of artistic filters (in software) being disallowed for a large part while allowing sharpening and cleanup tools etc. Can I assume that any filters used on the camera lens are legal? Such as polarizing filter, infrared or sparkle filters, etc?
2: Is the 'heal' tool (for removing sensor dust from images) legal to clean up the image? I read about the clone tool being illegal, but it sure does suck having to leave dust in a shot (fortunately my sensor is almost totally spotless and this is a non-issue for me but I am just curious).
I am excited to get involved in my first dpchallenge with the current minimal challenge. Thanks everyone for your time. |

1. Yes - anything done within (or with) the camera is always legal.
2. No - spot editing is not allowed in basic editing. Clone stamp is illegal because its spot editing. Levels, sharpness, etc. are applied globally to the whole image, so they're legal.

1) the editing rules are basically rules for photo editing software so lens filters are fine
2) the healing tool is considered spot editing and would not be legal under "basic" rules but ok under the "advanced" rules. so you can't do it under the minimalism challenge
oops someone beat me

I expected that was the case, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks guys. The global vs. spot rule of thumb sounds like an easy enough way to determine. |
