As an expatriated southern Californian, I'm well aware of Beach Ultimate Frisbee. I didn't much care for the picture, though, at least in challenge terms; I didn't get any sense of either extreme or action from it, really.

In CA Santa Cruz theres every year a tournament with all sorts of things with a frisbee. Long throws, accuracy, Etc... I would really love to go there and participate... this year they where going to have Ultimate frisbee there too but canceled it. it was going to be the second world Ultimate frisbee tournament... The First started in Portugal, with this i don't mean that the first ever was in Portugal because no way that would be possible. :) but we had almots 600 people over here to play beach ultimate it was really nice... Of Course USA had the four teams, Mixed, Men, Women and Masters and they one two of them i guess. :)

I have never heard of this - what is it exactly?

Regarding the pic - I did not see anything extreme in it either. Now if you had a headless motocross rider, doing a backflip while jumping over a river kayak while catching a surfboard with his teeth, I'd definitely have given you a 9. :)

Heres a video of beach ultimate frisbee in portugal.
Video 3.3mg

I appear in the video see if you know which one i am. :)

Rules
1.The Field -- A Beach Ultimate field is 75 m (83 yrds) long and 25 m (28 yrds) wide. The endzones on each end are 15 m. (17 yrds) deep.

2.Start of the game -- A coin (or Frisbee) toss determines what team will start on offence and what team starts on defence. Next, both teams (5-a-side) line up on the front of their respective endzone line. The defense throws the disc (Frisbee) to the offense and the game begins.

3.Movement of the disc and the players -- The disc can be thrown from one player to another in any direction. A player may not run while in possession of the disc.

4.Possesion -- The person with the disc has 10 seconds to throw the disc to a team mate. The defender guarding the thrower counts the seconds out loud ("stall one, stall two, stall three...").

5.Change of possession -- A turnover results whenever one of the following items occur:
1.the disc touches the ground (also when knocked down by the defense)
2.the disc is caught outside the field
3.the disc is intercepted by an opposing player
Upon a turnover the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.

6.Scoring -- A goal, worth 1 point, is scored when a player throws the disc to a teammate and it is successfully caught within the confines of the endzone of attack. Play is initiated after each score.

7.Initiate Play -- Each new point begins again with both teams lining up on the front of their respective endzone line with the team that just scored throwing the disc to the other team.

8.Non-contact -- Beach Ultimate is a non-contact sport. A foul occurs when contact is made.

9.No Referees -- The sport is self-officiated. All fouls are called by the player(s) involved. When a foul results in loss of possession, the play is stopped and resumed as if possession was not lost. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the play is redone.

These are the nine basic rules to the game.

hope you enjoy.

i don't live near a beach so we just play inlander's ultimate frisbee... excellent sport

disc golf (or frisbee golf) is great too. much less intense, but range and accuracy are key

Never tried disc golf and i guess in portugal it might never appear... we here play indoors, beach and grass ultimate... it has been really great and it is growing here in portugal which is even greater. :)

Lived in Santa Cruz, CA. The University (UCSC)has no football team but they do have a frisbee team! The School Mascot is a Banana Slug, not your normal university sport, but its that kind of place, far out, dude!

The local college has a frisbee gold course on campus, but as there is not beach around here that's as far as it goes. I agree though that the picture didn't really show the action that takes place during this game.

I know that but it was the best i got for that day... the end zones are the best places to get great photos of layouts...
