Hi,
So what are you guys trying to learn now... in terms of technical elemnts in photography and photoshop?
I am tring to learn how to take sharper and more crispy shots.. Trying to learn shooting birds and night shots...
Nothing new in photoshop...
In this thread try to tell what you are trying to learn and hope that someone has their experience to share... If you read something and you have some tips or tricks share them please.
First tell what you are learning and then if you have something to say to someones post share with them their experience. Hope i did not confuse the thread, and made myself clear.

I'm trying to learn a satisfying way to edit my shots more precisely, efficiently and appropiately. I'm trying different methods of black and white conversion, but find that, given a myriad of choices (in terms of possible settings and combinations of them), this requires a honing of my sense of how the image, precisely, should look like and a huge degree of Photoshop knowledge, which, really, I doubt I can require in a lifetime. ;-)
Photographs I admire provide some orientation in this respect but not enough to be able to apply my appreciation of these to my own work.
I have therefore decided to imitate (steal) specific methods of post-processing, one by one, for which I would welcome the cooperation of those whom I intend to rob.

That's exactly what I'm doing now myself; trying to acquire (even more) Photoshop fluency. That's what i want to know. I don't mean how to do weirdness, how to combine images or make psychedelic motion blurred fractal deconstructions (or whatever) but, rather, how to make Photoshop produce what I see with my mind's eye when I snap the shot.
So Zen and I are on the same path, it seems. Zen, if there's anything I know that you want, just ask.
Robt.

Having spent the best part of a year trying to make my images more painterly, I'm now trying to make my images more photographic. I hope that there'll be a point at which I stop and find a balance.
I'm also slaving under an increasing obsession with the manner of the work of Tony Ray-Jones, and struggling to find a way to bring that into a modern, digital, age. I like the gentleness of the humour he brings to his subjects, and want to find a way to express that in the people and places I see for myself. I have a feeling that this may be a lifetime's work, however.

Have you come to any repsonse for this?

I'm trying to put heart, soul, and magic into my photographs. This is becoming increasingly more difficult as I often fail to see anything worthy to inject into them. I guess I need to look harder. |

I've managed to figure out how to shoot "most" anything decently, and need to/want to learn to do people.
Not necessarily portrait studio stuff, though learning the fine art of how to pose people and knowing what to do with lighting presents a challenge all in itself.
Capturing the human element to show feeling/emotion properly is probably one of the toughest subjects out there in my opinion.
Maybe I just a have a thing for pointing a camera at someone, or knowing a way to approach people on a comfortable level. Until then, and until I can upgrade my equipment, I may just have to stick with an occasional candid as I have been. |

Seeing, I think, has more to do with living (an attitude, a stance) than with scrutiny (a persistent analysis). From where you're standing now, I wouldn't go a-hunting.
You're already there.
Hard looks are such a sad thing.
