Well, it's official. The new D70s has been announced and here I was hoping for something worth upgrading to but..... not worth the money at all... for the upgrade that is. :-)

You can see the comparison charts HERE.

I was hoping for at least an ISO 100. I would've upgraded just for that.

2" LCD... so what
longer battery life.... heck I shot 8 hour days on one battery so.... so what
wider flash output (from 20mm to 18 mm)... so what
better AF.... that's a good one but will be added to the D70 firware upgrade in a month or so.

So there ya go... no ISO 100, no 8 MP, no reduced noise at higher ISOs.

Come on Nikon! Love you guys but you need a camera between the D70 and the D2X.

I agree that the D70 replacement offers very little to be excited about. I think, for prospective buyers, the real treat is that the existence of a new product will inevitably drive the price of D70s (edit: that's D70 pluralized, NOT the new D70s model :) down a bit more while they are still in existence. If I was buying now, I'd save the extra bucks and buy a D70 instead of the new one and throw the extra bucks at accessories/glass.

Honestly, though, I think Nikon made a bad call and are about to suffer a blow in the prosumer market to the Canon 350 XT. I'm not a megapixel monster, but if I was going to buy a new entry DSLR right now and wasn't invested in Nikon glass, the 350 is looking more attractive than the D70s for the time being.

The D70s does not seem to offer much to prospective buyers that is not already available on the D70 and the new D50. Despite my considerable investment in Nikon glass, I am seriously considering a move to Canon. I believe Nikon has made a major strategic blunder in not offering an 8 or greater megapixel entry level DSLR. For just $100 difference the Rebel XT seems to be a lot more camera than the Nikon D50. IMO, Nikon blew it.

What Nikon need: a 10MP camera that uses the D2X's clever crop-for-speed mode down to 6 or 7MP maybe.

What Nikon needs is Canon's R&D budget!!!!

The D50 sounds good. I know that the canon might have mopre features, but from playing with the xt and the d70 in the store I think that the nikon's are much easier to use. With the quality of dslr's nowadays, having controls in accessible places is much more important than tiny differences in quality or speed.

Everyone is different. To me the Canon cameras feel better. The Nikon's feel weird. What this means is you have to try them in the store to see which one feels best for you.

That's why i went with Canon's 20D instead. And i'm so much happier now.

Sorry Nikon, just not working hard enought for me no more.

Exactly. Unless you really need a feature or need more fps for a particular kind of photography it's much better to just go with what feels comfortable and will help you take pictures. No real need to agonise about image quality.

I may be in the minority, but I'm ok with Nikon's current line up.

The D50 will bring an entry level dSLR at a great price point. Your average target user for that camera isn't making 16x20 fine art prints. A quality 4mp sensor would serve them effectively just as well.

The D70s is a nice set of refinements on an already great camera. Anyone can appreciate the larger LCD, and I'd love to have had the cabled remote option on mine. Wireless is cool, but I don't like the sensor placement. At this point, I'm not seeing a need (a WANT for sure!) for massive megapixels. I can make prints in the sizes that I need, and they have great quality. Anything can be better, but my NEEDS are happily met.

If I needed serious detail at larger print sizes, I could get the D2x, which is another phenominal camera. Sure, Canon has more megapixels, but again, unless you need them... At this point I don't have a real justification.

Canon is on the edge with new technologies, but Nikon has maintained its place in producing long-term products with proven technologies. Both companies attract different types of photographers, and both have pros and cons. I think this update actually show Nikon is listening to its consumers more than listening to gear-nuts on equipment review forums.

Canon makes indisputably great gear, but they (very successfully) target the gear-nuts. I'm happy with Nikon, and plan to stay with them.

All about having choices. It's good to have so many now. Unfortunately you really can't choose a camera by playing around in the store other then handling or looks. You need real world settings in which you will use the camera.

That's the point, handling is a very key issue. If it doesn't handle well or feel right in your hand then you won't want to use it. As far as other camera features, well that's where you either trust others opinions of them or find a place that will let you try before you buy or has a good return policy.
