Easiest way to find out is call the venue and check.

Depends...
a friend of mine works at a concert venue...generally camera are not allowed, but these days with cell phone cameras and such they actual door keepers have the job of defining 'camera' - bascially little p&s's get in, big 'profesional cameras' do not (dSLR or other 'large and professinal' looking cameras.

Sooo...put the little p&s in your pocket and go. If you wanna bring the Rebel with flash bracket, 550EX w/ softbox, 28-135IS lens...you're probably gonna have a problem.

It depends upon the venue entirely.

For instance, the Joe Louis Arena, where the Red Wings would play, if NHL Hockey was going on this year, has some rule shown below...

Camera Policy:
Cameras under 54 mm are allowed inside Joe Louis Arena on game day. Cameras with lenses that extend over 54mm and detachable lenses over 54mm will not be allowed inside Joe Louis Arena on game day. Video cameras and flash photography are not allowed.

Your best bet would be to search the Internet for the Camera Policy of the venue you will be attending.

Basically, if you have a Canon Digital Rebel, you are SOL, if all you have is the Kit Lense. Yep, the kit lense is unacceptable at Joe Louis Arena on Gameday.

I know at bank one ballpark in AZ they allow cameras, but if it looks like professional gear they will send you back to your car. So I guess they only allow crappy photos :)

just found this

Cameras/Video Equipment

Cameras and video equipment are permitted in the stadium during Ravens̢۪ games. Video cameras may not be used to reproduce the game and must not interfere with other fans̢۪ enjoyment of the game. (NO Camera Cases)

Long story: I took my boy to a monster truck show a couple months ago at Edison Field in Aneheim and took my camera. I checked ahead of time and all they said was "no videocameras." So we get to the gate and they check my bag and tell me "no professional cameras allowed, please put it back in the car." I just had my 20D, 2 (nothing fancy) lenses and a flash. I nicely explained what the website said, otherwise I wouldn't have brought it, but that I wasn't going to leave my whole setup in the car in a dark parking lot.

So to make a long story even longer, she gets her supervisor who inspects my equipment and says "big lenses aren't allowed, just put the lens back in the car" refering to my 75-300 (big deal). So now I'm feeling a little peeved, so to test her I asked her what the actual stadium regulations for a "big lens" is and she stuttered "oh, 1 to 2 inches." So I just laughed and took the lens back to the car. I had good seats so my 28-135 was ok.

It sucks, but almost everything is abuot making money these days. If there is a way to make money off of anything, someone will be there to decide how that can be done and if they will allow anyone that they don't "own" to do it.

With cities "owning" the printing of their skyline, architects "owning" photographic reproductions of their buildings and all the other wacky stuff going on, there may very well be a day when nobody will be allowed to take a camera into public without having some kind of pre-arranged permit.

Yes it is about making money. I have invested a lot of time and money into shooting certain shows at certain venues, this includes having to pay the promoter a fee to be allowed to sell my photos to participants and others. There are a few reasons for this.

1. To protect the promoters rights to a comodity, be it a ball club or a show. They have invested heavily and
taken a number of financial risks to present their promotion, they own it and have a right to profit from it.
2. To control the quality of the "official" photos that are presented to the general public of their particular
team or event. Shooting from the stands with point and shoot isn't going to give you the quality you need
to sell photos, usually.
3. To protect the photographer who has invested the time and money into covering the event. I spend days
preparing and shooting events. I either pay the promoter outright or give a percentage of my profits to
them. If someone else is allowed in with "professional" equipment and sells them it eats at my profit.

I would suggest calling the promoter, not the venue, as the promoter is usually the one who decides what is and isn't allowed in to the event. If you want to shoot an event call the promoter, or better yet e-mail them with samples and ask how to get credentialed or if you can cover the event for them. If they already have a
photographer or company covering the event find out who they are and contact them and ask if they need help or would allow you to tag along so you can learn more about event photography.

You would be surprised at the number of promoters who don't have a photographer covering things for them, and they all promo pics. If your just getting started be honest and tell them, they may ask you to shoot a few things for free. This is how I started and I do 4 or 5 shows a year, as my main work is photojournalism and weddings. but I do have some promoters who call me to cover events for them. They get a % and I make decent money.
