Pick a photo from abandoned buildings and rate its critiques. A,B,C,D or F

how do you propose doing this? by quoting a comment on an image and grading it there? or by pulling the comment into this thread?

Just pick any photo, look over its critiques and rate them overall, not idividual critiques. and maybe add why

You still didn't say where. Could be fun, but where are you going to rate/comment on the critiques? I'd say post it here with a thumb of the image being discussed.

You need to be careful with these. Everyone always complains there's not enough comments, and now you are going to start rating the comments that were made (is that correct?). You could scare people away from making future comments.

My intent was to get some of the better critiquers(new word) to give sugestions on how to give better critiques and maybe improve the overall usefullness of the comments.

Do people really want critiques that go over there photos and point out small details that might improve a shot? If so, are you hard enough on the details? Am I to hard on them? I look at the winning Abandoned Building photo and notice its a really cool shot. Possibly a 10 vote from me if I felt it met the challenge. But I do notice a tree coming over the left side of the building is distracting as is a cloud coming out of a mountain like a volcano. Do people overall really want to hear that about what in there mind is a masterpiece(heck this one is real close to a masterpiece in my mind as well, you certainly see worse on postcards all the time).

I think the root of the critique should start at the knowledge of what is too critique.

too many members giving their view of what their sense of art is, instead of giving a fair overview of how the picture was taken, I.E crop, levels, composition, mid tones, lines, balance, blacks and whites, subject, theme, ect..

That's it, I'm done doing any 'critiquing'. I see the err of my ways having so far only given mostly compliments.
:-(

{edit} - I'll leave the 'critiquing' to the experts from here on in.

Of course, the button could be changed from reading "Critique" to "Comment", perhaps that would satisfy the SEMANTICS POLICE. {/edit}

I never said there was anything wrong with commenting on any photo. I'm not sure people really want critiques anyway.

No. i disagree.

Its human nature to be recognized wether its a good comment or bad, involving or not. We all want someone that says " Hey I see what you did and this is what I see..."

In a private message I just sent, it is a matter of being fair, and NEUTRAL on the overview of the pix, and not give IN TO PERSONAL OPPINION.

I think the 'critique-er' is already rated by the 'helpful' button.
Yes, many here do want to have a critique of their work. It's up to them to take it or leave it. :) It's an important part of learning..IMHO. Also I might add that critique is part of all kinds of art medium.

The 'helpful' button doesn't work at all. Most use it as a way of reminding themselves they've read a comment, some tick only complimentary comments, some don't tick any.

The reward for good and thoughtful commenting, is one's regard around the site.

Interesting thread subject when viewed in the list of threads, but as I read through, I think this thread title should be changed to "Lead Balloon" - there's my critique. ;-)

I agree that the helpful button doesn't really judge a comment at all. For example, I spent quite a bit of time on a comment awhile back making suggestions that I felt could be improved upon. Only to go back later and find that ONLY the 'nice shot' comments were marked useful, and mine stood marked as useless, as were many others that stated suggestions on how to make the photo better.
It is a bit irritating.

Someone suggested having 3 categories for comments:
-Helpful
-Thank You
-Not Helpful

I think that was it. Not sure if it made it into the Website Suggestion forum.
