Amazing, a Pole then a German... And not that old a man either. If he stays healty, we're looking at 50 consecutive years (at least) of non-Italian Popes. 'Tis a wonder indeed.
edit: He's 77, I thought he was younger. The interesting thing is he was/is one of the leaders of the movement to preserve Catholic orthodoxy in changing times; he's about as far from "liberal" as one can be, even by the standards of the old church. Good profile here: //www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/documentaries/profile/

At age 78, Pope Benedict XVI is no spring chicken. John Paul II served for 26 years, the present pope would have to live to age 102 to accomplish a 50 year non Italian reign. Not likely.
God Bless Pope Benedict XVI!

Yeah you missed my edit; I'd thought he was mid-60's...

I dont understand why they change their name. Living well into his 70's and now he has to be called something else? That's gotta be confusing. I kinda like 'Pope Joe' personally. |

He wasn't my candidate, but I congratulate him nonetheless.

God help us all!!
Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedicto XVI, holds a medieval point of view regarding women, sex, and christian doctrine....
You can find here a recent letter he wrote, which reflects his ideas.
These are definitely interesting times....

Name changes represent new identity in calling/vocation. Simon was remaned Peter by Jesus, based upon his confession of Christ's identity: "Upon this rock (petros) I will build my church". In Catholic monastic steeings, every monk takes a new name upon making final vows, as a daily way of leaving an old way of life and living in the new calling.
Speaking of the name Joe, has anyone read Tony Hendra's memoir, "Father Joe". A powerful and well-written story of the spiritual influence of a Benedictine Catholic Monk/Priest (Father Joe) upon a man's life who was a seeker after God as well as an intellectual and skeptic. Tony Hendra was Editor of the National Lampoon and a pretty well-known British comic writer. My high commendations for his excellent book on spiritual pilgrimage.
God's best to Pope Benedict XVI. |

According to wikipedia anyway:
"Thus, when Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope in 2005, his choice of the title Benedict XVI was intended to convey a promise of humanitarian diplomacy and a firm stance against modernism." |

I'm Protestant, but I know this time has been tough for my Catholic brothers and sisters....I pray that God blesses Pope Benedict and uses him to bring the Message of Christ even further into the world, which is, after all, the point.
