I use a 120GB portable hardrive, with monitor and built in editing tools.. Actualy I just use my lap top with external hardrive.. I keep it in the vehicle when shooting nature, or bring it on set for studio or other plausable shoots. Thsi I have found alows me to find flaws in lighting and such before the event is over.

I have settled on the FlashTrax, thanks all for your valuable input. The real selling factor is that with the $50 rebate and now $280, just too tough to pass up. I met get the cig. lighter charger as well .... seems that would make sense. |

It is awesome for many reasons.
However, if you are working in Nikon .NEF RAW format... you are out of luck.
It currently only supports JPG.
It is also a great MP3 player! |
I'd just like to clarify that the Gmini's will copy any file format from the card to the hard drive, it's only displaying them which is restricted to jpeg - not something I'm bothered about with the 220's little monochrome screen : )

The Flashtrax looks almost perfect...what would make it perfect? A "Mic in" jack...
I'm in the market for an mp3 player, portable photo storage, and a low budget field recorder...if I could get all 3 in 1 unit that'd be fantastic!
Does anyone know if the iPOD photo has a jack to accept a microphone?

i got a 20Gb Gmini 120 (? it's old skool -- doesn't display the images at all) for less than $100 on clearance at circuit city.
i took it on a trip to europe and didn't lose a single image. i really abused it.
it doesn't have the fancy features of a lot of the others (i.e., you can't view images) but i wasn't worried about that. if i wasn't going to look at the images on the cam's lcd, i wasn't going to look at them on the device.
anyway, thumbs up for the gmini. if you can get an old model cheap cheap, even that is cheaper than a 2 Gb card. :D

Gawd, I'm gonna end up sounding like I'm on commission here or something, but ...
The Gmini 220 has both a built in mic and a mic jack : )

| Yep - Archos AV420 has full recording and playback ability.
Record Sound: built in microphone, stereo inputs, fm radio and radio recorder (with add on fm receiver)
Record Video: video receiver and recorder (for recording direct from tv signal) - 704x480 @ 30 f/s (near DVD quality, better than VHS, playback direct to tv)
Record Picture: no built in camera
Playback Music: .mp3 .wmf .wav, [internal speaker or headphone jack]
Playback Video: mpeg4 - .avi files (320x240 3.5" screen, or output to tv)
Playback pictures: .jpg and .bmp (320x240 3.5" screen), either 9-pic thumbnails, 4-pic thumbnails, 1-pic or 2 or 3 zoom modes. Only complaint here is that my photos from my 20D take about a second and a half to draw on one pic mode, probably because it is drawing high res in case you are linked to an external monitor/tv - though 4-pic mode is very fast. And no histogram function (think that the Epson has this). But really not a problem - this is more storage and quick review, rather than something I am going to make an editorial decision on.
Built in Compactflash reader (type 1) - fast - 1 GB of pics takes a couple of minutes to download.
USB 2.0
20GB, 40GB and 100GB models
Not much larger than an ipod (especially the 3g models). Battery life excellent (can watch a couple of movies, spend a day listening to music without recharge). Transfer of photos is not one button press - probably two. But hardly difficult.
Sounds as though the Flashtrax is slightly cheaper - I paid £300 for my AV 420 3 months ago, though in the US I think it goes for about the same in $ or not much more. I really do recommend it, especially if you will use the other functions when you are not on multi-day photography sessions.

I nearly bought Gmini instead - main difference is size (Gmini slightly smaller size, much smaller screen) and Gmini does not record video from the telly. Both very capable machines.
How much commission should I be expecting...!? |

I shopped a lot for those thingies in the past.
I'm purchasing a Ipod Photo 30gig soon. Its the best i could find. Its easy to use, offers nice storage (Raw files included, although you can't view them) and you can listen to hours of music while shooting.
how great is that.. [/url] |

You can, if you set your 20D to shoot RAW + embedded JPEG. iPod will display the embedded JPEG version.

Hey, I also have an Archos 320 and I'd just like to second everyone who has recommended the Archos. (The 320 is the predecessor to the 420... has similar functions.) I bought the Archos b/c you can record video from the TV or rip DVDs and I watch it during my commute, but the card reader has been VERY useful on vacations. It is super fast and easy to use. File naming is a little cumbersome, but the Archos plugs into my computer like an external USB HD (very easy to use) and I do most of my naming/copying/etc. when it's plugged in. EDIT: The Archos also plays MP3 music and has a built in mic for recording in MP3 format, btw.
I would not necessarily recommend the following technique as it voids the warranty, but I bought the 320 which comes with a 20GB hard drive, then bought an 80GB hard drive and pulled the Archos apart and replaced the hard drive. Now I have the 80GB Archos and a separate 20GB hard drive (which I pulled out of the Archos) for much less than it would have cost to get the 80GB Archos.

I made the mistake of buying the LG 16X Internal Dual Layer DVD-RW Drive for $150 CAD (about $100 USD). It is very SLOW and it is extremely heavy. My laptop is actually more portable and lightweight.
The funny thing is I bought this particular device for the same reasons as you - I wanted something to travel with so I don't have to bring my computer.
Now that I read all the suggestions about IPODs, I think I'll take DPCers advice and buy an IPOD for a one-month trip to Alaska I plan to take this summer. Glad you posted your question! |

I've got an iPod, and I'm very happy with it - but I mainly use it for music. If all you are looking for is portable storage there might be cheaper solutions for you - ones that have user-replaceable batteries would be a great boon far afield. That's my only gripe about the iPod - I have an older model and the battery sucks (just sent it in for $99 replacement). Having something that would take AA NiMH would be fantastic IMHO.

Ccraft,
I am happy I posted it as well, got a LOT of great, thoughtful, replies that it seems everyone can use.
Wow ... a month in Alaska. Have a 2nd unused ticket? :o)

I read through all the posts and no one really mentions the Epson P-2000. Anyone here tried one? I am interested because it will display RAW (JPEG).
Thanks!
