For once I am off to a great start and I couldn't be happier, though I am sure it will go down from here, I still counting on this one to be a new personal best!!

My goal is to not come in last.

We'll see, though. ;)

Edit: Ooof! My score is dropping like a rock. I might not meet this goal - lol.

I was hoping for top 20% or even top 10% with my entry. These enormous free study challenges are tough though!! Lots of great competition and lots of super jaded speed voters giving each photo barely two seconds a piece.

Good luck to all!

I submitted something I liked personally, and wanted to submit, not what the voters want. But my goal is to "reach" at least a few people such that they select it as a favorite. That, and at least stay at my average or above.

I liked my entry, and I didn't think it would have a sub-5 average at LEAST. Currently, it's tanking. So if you're where I am, we could hope that the trolls are just passing by and that all this should clear up ;)

Its not such a BAD thing to be different, I thought i was alone in the world of diffrences but hey WELCOME.

Saying that, my score has gone up since lunch to 5.7 if i go to lunch again maybe it will hit a 6 but then i will feel sick, too much curry.

I LIKE MY SHOT!!! and so does my cat........ oh hang on... I ain't got a cat.

Now I will not be able to sleep for a week because of that silly ribbon dream!

Quite frankly, I don't care much about my score in the Free Study challenge. I decided to submit a photo that I liked and that was a bit different from my usual entries. If I can reach a few people with my picture I'll be a happy camper.* (Though I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't want it to be above my average score.)

Had I wanted a high score I'd have submitted this one instead:

*This is, of course, just another way of saying that my score isn't very high. ;-)

I have to admit my entry was completely for the high score since I had one I thought could do some high score.

I also thought of sending this one that I did originally for the abandoned house challenge but could't send because of the basic rules.

I went for a shot which is probably far too understated to score incredibly well... and I was right :). It's not doing badly, but I'd say I definately chose the wrong shot.

After a 3 month challenge drought, mostly due to the thermo-nuclear melt down in my hard drive,it's great to get back in the game. I had almost forgotten how addictive Update Fever can be. I would like to think that my goal is to win but really I just enjoy the photography & the community here. I thought I had a chance after the first vote I got was a 9. However, I was unable to stop anyone else voting & now after 33 more votes I am tracking along on my average of just over 5. Oh well back to reality.

Though I am not "super jaded" I am one of those people that gives an image "barely two seconds" to evaluate. You don't need more time than that. Of course, I'll spend extra time with good ones but only to admire great work and spend extra time with others to leave comments.

I look for good photographic technique such as the use of the rule of thirds, perspective and/or artistic use of DOF and lots of other technique things. I check to see if it has proper lighting and focus. I check to see if the photographer has improperly overexposed areas in their picture. I check very closely for digital effects such as haloing, pixelation and electronic noise. I tolerate overuse of things such as dodge and burn, selective desaturation and other things since this is an educational site.

I determine the main subject and check for distracting or unneeded elements within the composition that do not support it. I look for photographic rules violations and decide if they are intentional or not. If intentional I determine if it works for that particular image.

For a long time my scoring goal was to match the score given by the group and I got quite good at it. Usually one of my personal top three picks makes the actual top three.

I've since decided that DPCers are harsh voters and now rate images much higher than I used to. I always give the photographer the benefit of the doubt. I don't waste time deciding if they "meet the challenge" or not and assume they always do. Besides, the picture must stand on its own merits long after the challenge topic is forgotten. I do give extra credit for meeting the challenge well. And under no circumstances would I ever consider recommending an image for DQ.

Yup... I do all that in "barely two seconds".

My "hero". Seriously, I like the way you vote.
I have to take more time to vote on dial-up. I'm looking at them for a long time as they're loading.

I ditherbated, entered one shot that was ok but had another I was working on. Still not totally happy with the final editing. Rushed home from work thinking I had another hour to work on it and change my entry and didn't take into account the daylight savings hours changes on both sides of the world. That's the way the cookie crumbles LOL
This was the image I was going to work on

My entry's totally diff, not doing brilliant scorewise......low 5's BUT :) someone's made it their favourite and that has put the biggest smile on my face!!!!!
04/19/2005 07:44:08 AM · #23
I changed my entry four times and settled on something I hoped would score a 5.0 But it looks more like brown ribbon time. I wish my unsubmit button worked!

I just hope to break 5...this is why i stopped for a while...

I didn't intend to submit anything but I took so many photos this past weekend I thought I'd put one in.
