A friend asked if I could take some pictures of her daughter for a special event. She told me in the beginning that she would give me a little money for doing this for her. I said yes as long as she would sign a model release so I could use the photos in my portfolio etc.
The pictures are finally edited and they look awesome. Way better then I think both of us imagined. I spent about 2 – 3 hours doing Photoshop edits and what not.
She signs the model release and asked the magic wordsâ€Â¦ How much do I owe you.
What do I say. I don̢۪t want to rip her off but the pics look awesome.
Any suggestions or ideas.

don't take this the wrong way, but, if you're asking the question, then you are just getting started on the professional side of photography. yes, you probably have some great images. and, at the very least, your raw cost should be covered. but, beyond that, i wouldn't charge anything more at this point. if you already have enough images to complete a portfolio, then you should have a price sheet. if not, this is a great way to build a portfolio that you can show to future paying clients--if that's what you want to do.
how do you find a price? check around and see what their options are, ranging from a the one-hour portrait studio at the mall to the high-end studios in town. pick a place in the middle that takes into account your abilities, your availability, and your commitment to doing this somewhat professionally.
i sort of discussed this in another thread. hope this helps. have fun!

Considering she's a friend and it appears you spent only a few hours (vs. days...) on the work, I'd offer the prints in exchange for her explicit permission for you to use them in your portfolio. No further charge... If the images are that good, she'll show them around and you'll get more business (paying, next time!). |

compared to Gary Fongs prices, it doesn´t matter what you charge, it will always be cheap :)
Professional Fees GARY FONG:
Wedding/Event Day Rate $120,000 ($10,000/hr for a 12 hour coverage - this is a reduction from the regular fee of $12,500/hr)
$40,000 is required to hold the date, Balance due 21 days before the event. |

As someone who's just given 7 shots to a small volume magazine, I would give them away at cost. (Eg. a few dollars for prints.)
The person is a friend, they'll be stunned, and you'll get the satisfaction of doing a good job for your friend without them paying lots for it.
