I am editing photos from both my husband's 10D, and my 20D, and noticed something about the resolution that I don't understand.

Photos shot in highest(fine) jpeg resolution with the 10D are 180 dpi.

Photos shot in highest(fine) jpeg resolution with the 20D are 72 dpi.

Am I doing something wrong with the 20D settings, or is this the normal high jpeg res on the 20D? And if so, WHY?

Thanks for any insight!

All that means is that the 20D thinks the print size is much larger. It's not actually changing the quality of the photos.

DPI values don't actually affect the pixel size of the images.

DPI values dictate how the actual pixel map when they are printed onto paper, for instance.

These values can be edited in your image editor, or more conveniently, just sent the number of inches you want your print to be, and the program should work out the DPI values for you.

Thanks SO much for the replies. I was kind of freaking out a little! I was thinking that the actual shot resolution had to be higher for better print quality. Thanks for the "refresher" on dpi. I am doing exactly as you suggest Paul; I am fixing the print resolution in PS.
